Lexington Entrepreneur Challenges Incumbent for County Council District Seat

Lexington, SC 05/30/2024 – Local businessman and entrepreneur Dr. Brent Munnerlyn, PharmD, has announced his intention to run for Lexington County Council in District 3. He is aiming to unseat the incumbent, Darrell Hudson, and represent the interests of the residents in the west Lexington area and along Highway 378 to the outskirts of Lake Murray. Lexington County District 3 is home to several high-income residents residing south of the lake.

About Dr. Brent Munnerlyn

Born and raised in Lexington County within District 3, Munnerlyn attended Lexington District One schools and subsequently graduated from the University of South Carolina Pharmacy School. A businessman by trade, Dr. Munnerlyn owns an independent pharmacy called My Pharmacy and Optical in District 3, boasting nearly 10,000 patients in the District 3 community and across the Midlands.

Prior to launching his pharmacy, Munnerlyn effectively managed the Health & Wellness division for Walmart across the Midlands and surrounding areas. His management skills saw him handling health care centers, pharmacies, and optical divisions, while employing hundreds. His tenure saw an increase in the company’s top line revenue and profit over his ten-year duration. Credited with helping to fix a $82 million loss on benefit policies, Munnerlyn earned a reputation for his business acumen.

Munnerlyn and the Fireworks Business

Dr. Munnerlyn also owns and operates a professional fireworks business, Munnerlyn Pyrotechnics, and several retail store fronts dedicated to firework sales under the names Joe Dirt Fireworks, Sam Fireworks and Bada Boom Fireworks. His stores cater to diverse cultures that use fireworks to celebrate their various holidays and events.

When asked why he is running for the Lexington County Council, Munnerlyn voiced concerns over the incumbent, citing instances where Hudson made decisions without considering the impacts on others. Munnerlyn strongly believes that council members should represent all residents, even those who are unable to physically attend council meetings, and not just cater to vocal minorities.

Munnerlyn’s Stand on Development Issues

Munnerlyn strongly opposes unnecessary regulation and promises to work towards fostering sustainable development by collaboration with stakeholders. He believes that developers and homeowners should bear some of the infrastructure costs, and not existing taxpayers alone. He supports affordable housing and wants to create a balance that doesn’t alienate young adults looking to settle or seniors seeking to downsize.

Emphasizing his commitment to his campaign, Munnerlyn clarified that his campaign had been personally funded by him and the fireworks industry, and not by any developer or builder. This, he says, allows him to objectively represent the public and work in their best interest without any bias.
