Columbia was all abuzz on a beautiful Friday morning as local legal icon Jack Swerling took the stage for what he thought would be a simple talk at the lawyers’ continuing legal education seminar. Little did he know, a surprise was waiting for him that would leave the esteemed attorney, and many in attendance, utterly amazed!
At precisely 11 a.m., the atmosphere shifted when none other than S.C. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Kittredge made an unexpected entrance. The room went silent, and all eyes turned to the Chief Justice as he announced he was there to present a rare and prestigious recognition: the Chief Justice’s Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Legal Profession. Last handed out by former Chief Justice Jean Toal in 2015, this award is not one to be taken lightly!
Justice Kittredge didn’t hold back on his admiration for Swerling. “When you’re in the presence of Jack Swerling, you’re in the presence of greatness, an icon in our profession,” he declared, prompting an impromptu standing ovation from the crowd not once, but twice! What a moment it must have been for the man who has dedicated over 50 years to the legal field!
With accolades aplenty, Justice Kittredge shared the many reasons why Swerling has earned his top-notch reputation. From being a South Carolina Superlawyer year after year to being featured in the Best Lawyers in America, Swerling’s achievements read like a resume of greatness. His memberships in elite groups, such as the American College of Trial Lawyers and the International Academy of Trial Lawyers, where membership is capped at just 600 globally, only add to his impressive credentials.
But it’s not just his accolades that define Jack Swerling. He also has a unique gift for mentoring new generations of lawyers. Many young attorneys credit him as a significant influence in their careers, stating he shows them not only the essential skills for legal practice but also the beauty of the law itself. And there’s more – his passion for the courtroom and belief in upholding justice with both zeal and civility sets a gold standard for those who follow in his footsteps.
After the emotional introduction, Swerling took a moment to collect himself and responded with a heartfelt remark, “I got completely sucked in on this!” The room erupted in laughter, showcasing the jovial spirit he carries. He added, “For him to give me this award is really very special to me.” Who wouldn’t feel honored receiving such recognition from a colleague of such high stature?
As for how this surprise unfolded, it was a clever trick orchestrated by Justice Kittredge himself along with longtime friends and fellow attorneys. Their plan to bring Swerling to the seminar under false pretenses allowed for this delightful surprise. Little did he know he’d been the guest of honor all along!
Swerling is well-known throughout Columbia not just for his impressive legal prowess, but also for his larger-than-life personality. With a commanding presence and a friendly demeanor, he’s become a staple in the legal community, even acquiring the nickname “Mr. Murder” due to his high-profile representation of notorious criminal cases.
It was in the early 1980s that he first gained significant public attention when he took on the case of a serial killer. That case, while resulting in loss, undeniably paved the way for Swerling’s prominent and illustrious career.
Joining him for the celebration were countless friends and family members, including his wife of 54 years, Erika, as well as former law clerks and colleagues who have been touched by his mentorship throughout the years. “People don’t realize how many lives Jack has touched… he’s been a mentor, a professor, a boss, and a leader for so many generations of young lawyers,” said one fellow attorney, sharing how Swerling’s influence stretches far and wide across the profession.
As Jack Swerling continues to inspire within his community, one thing is for sure: this Columbia legend will not only be remembered for his courtroom victories but also for the countless lives he has enriched along the way. What an incredible celebration of a truly remarkable career!
