Water Treatment Plant Expansion

Exciting News for West Columbia: Lake Murray Water Plant Expansion Underway!

West Columbia residents, get ready for some refreshing changes to your drinking water experience! The long-awaited expansion of the Lake Murray water plant has been in the pipeline for eight years and is finally kicking into high gear. If you’ve ever had concerns about the capacity, taste, or smell of your tap water, this project is specifically designed with you in mind!

Project Overview

The Lake Murray water plant stands as the largest water treatment facility in Lexington County, and it’s about to undergo a major transformation. In a special city council meeting held earlier this month, Andy Zaengle, who heads up the engineering and water plants for the city, shared some exciting progress updates. He revealed that the project is currently ahead of schedule and is unfolding nicely!

Capacity and Technology Improvements

Initiated back in 2016, the project initially aimed to expand the plant’s capacity but has grown to incorporate cutting-edge technology to enhance the taste and smell of the water. Construction began in April 2023 to tackle the capacity aspect, and according to Zaengle, about 30% of that work is already completed. Once the expansion is fully operational, the plant’s capacity is expected to increase from 27 million gallons per day to a whopping 36 million gallons!

Making Water Better

Have you ever turned on your faucet only to be greeted by a strange smell or an off-putting taste? Zaengle understands that concern and explained that the city is implementing ozone technology to specifically address these issues. This state-of-the-art technique comes with a hefty price tag of $40 million but promises to effectively eliminate organic compounds in the water, improving both taste and odor.

Zaengle couldn’t be more enthusiastic about the project, stating, “Addressing taste and odor really comes from our customers. They don’t like it, and they want it addressed.” He continued to emphasize the importance of listening to the community, affirming that these enhancements will allow locals to enjoy their sweet tea and favorite beverages without distraction.

Funding and Impact on Water Bills

If you’re worried about how this project might affect your water bills, you can breathe easy. The funding, totaling an estimated $86 million, will come from multiple sources, including bond funds, and won’t directly impact your monthly water costs. So feel free to drink up without worrying about those pesky extra charges!

Aesthetic Changes and Future Projection

As the plant undergoes this impressive upgrade, don’t expect any dramatic changes to its appearance. Most of the construction will take place underground, meaning that if you were to stroll by the facility during the process, you might not even notice much difference on the surface. Zaengle reassures residents, “Fundamentally, if you were to walk from the beginning to the end, you’ll notice that there is a difference. But it’s not going to end up being except for those in part really that there is a whole new set of structures out here that weren’t here before.”

Looking ahead, the project is set for completion by 2027. So, if you’ve ever wished for tasty water straight from the tap or a pleasant shower experience free from odors, you’re in for a treat! This expansion is all about providing West Columbia with the high-quality water you deserve, addressing your concerns, and making your daily life just a little bit better.

Stay tuned for updates and enjoy the refreshing changes coming to your water supply!
