Columbia, South Carolina – Dutch Fork High School Linebacker Commits to South Carolina

In a significant move just days before a highly anticipated game, Dutch Fork High School linebacker and defensive end Josh Smith announced his commitment to the University of South Carolina on Tuesday. This decision comes ahead of the Silver Foxes’ critical matchup against Irmo for the Region 4-5A title this Friday.

Smith’s choice stems from his desire to contribute to his hometown team. “Just the ability to come in early and put it on for your hometown. It is really what drew me to South Carolina,” Smith expressed. He emphasized that the consistent attention and recruitment by the Gamecock staff throughout the past few months played a vital role in his decision.

Commitment Details

As Smith prepares to embark on his college career, he chose South Carolina over competitors such as Ole Miss and N.C. State. He visited the Gamecocks last weekend during the Texas A&M game. “The visit went great,” Smith remarked. He appreciated the opportunity to spend time with the coaching staff and gather insights on his potential role within the team. Specifically, Coach Clayton White discussed how he envisions Smith contributing as a Mike or Will linebacker, similar to the roles current players, Debo Williams and Demetrius Knight, take on this season.

A Bright Future

Smith’s commitment adds him to the Gamecocks’ growing Class of 2025 recruiting class, now totaling 21 commitments. According to 247Sports Composite, he is ranked as the 25th-best player in South Carolina. He is expected to sign his letter of intent during the early signing period starting on December 4, with plans to enroll in January.

Interestingly, Smith’s journey started with a commitment to Coastal Carolina back in April. However, he decided to decommit in late September after South Carolina offered him. He has made several visits to multiple programs, including N.C. State and an unofficial trip to Clemson, although the Tigers never extended an offer.

High School Achievements

Standing at 6-foot-2 and weighing 230 pounds, Smith has proven himself as a powerful force on the field for the Silver Foxes over the past two years. This season, he has a standout record, leading his team with 55 tackles (12 for loss), seven sacks, and three quarterback pressures. Last season, he tallied 63 tackles (20 for loss), seven sacks, and 15 quarterback hurries during Dutch Fork’s run to the Class 5A state championship.

His abilities have been recognized as he was selected to participate in the prestigious Shrine Bowl all-star game last month. Dutch Fork head coach Tom Knotts praised Smith, calling him a “quiet player and quiet leader” with an impressive understanding of the game. “He has a real burst to the ball and is a solid hitter,” Knotts added, suggesting that Smith’s future in college football looks very promising.

As the Silver Foxes hold a perfect record of 8-0 and remain ranked No. 1 in Class 5A, all eyes will be on Smith as he prepares himself for both the upcoming championship game and his move to the collegiate level.
