Columbia’s JerryFest Marks a Decade of Music and Community Celebration

Columbia Celebrates a Blissful 10 Years of JerryFest

This past weekend, the lively neighborhood of Five Points in Columbia experienced a joyous blend of music, art, and community spirit as it hosted the 10th annual JerryFest music festival on October 6, 2024. Bright and sunny weather greeted festival-goers, with temperatures soaring to a delightful 79°F and a gentle breeze, creating the perfect fall day for celebrating the life and artistry of the legendary Grateful Dead’s frontman, Jerry Garcia.

A Festival of Memories

The festival, which began as a small gathering of friends after Garcia’s passing in 1995, has blossomed over the years. Initially celebrated in local bars, it found its vibrant home in Five Points in 2014, thanks to the collaboration between the owners of Loose Lucy’s and the Five Points Association. Since then, it has transformed into a much-anticipated annual event that unites fans of all ages.

This year’s headliner was none other than the remarkable New Potato Caboose, a jam band with a rich history nearly spanning 40 years. The excitement was palpable as the band took the stage after a long absence from Columbia, with energy resonating from the crowd. Don McCallister, one of the festival’s co-founders, added a nostalgic touch while introducing the band, reminiscing about their early days playing at loved local venues. “Back in the ’80s, these guys used to come to a club called Greenstreets,” he said, his enthusiasm infectious. “Forty years later, New Potato Caboose returns to Columbia!”

New Art for a New Era

This year’s JerryFest wasn’t just about the music; it also marked the unveiling of a new permanent art installation in Five Points. Local artist Clark Ellefson showcased his latest creation, a whimsical “headphone wearing bearded giant,” affectionately named “Fritz”. The name was chosen through a fun social media contest conducted by the Five Points Association, allowing the community to engage creatively in the festival.

“We are excited to see this project come to fruition,” stated Heather McDonald, the Executive Director of the Five Points Association. “It reflects the creativity we have here in Five Points and acknowledges our unique music culture. Unveiling our robot head at JerryFest made perfect sense!”

A Day Full of Fun

Throughout the day, attendees were treated to a fantastic lineup of performances from several talented acts, including JGBCB, Machine Funk, The Grateful Brothers, Ten Mile Ride, and the Columbia Drum Circle. The festival also offered a vibrant marketplace filled with craft vendors, delicious food trucks, and entertainment options such as pinball games from Bang Back Pinball Lounge. For families, there was a Lil’ Hippie Corner featuring arts and crafts booths, tie-dye stations, and much more.

As the sun began to set behind the colorful tents, festival-goers enjoyed not only the sounds of lively music but also the incredible community spirit that JerryFest embodies. It’s an event where people come together to celebrate not only the legacy of Jerry Garcia, but also the creativity and camaraderie that makes Columbia a unique place.
