IRMO, S.C. – Get ready, because something special is happening in our town! On September 13th, 2024, the Tunnel to Towers 5K will take over Irmo, celebrating and honoring our real-life heroes: first responders, military service members, and the 343 brave firefighters of the FDNY who lost their lives in the tragic events of September 11th, 2001. This annual race has a significance that goes beyond just being a fun run; it’s a heartfelt tribute that brings us all together.
Among the runners participating this year is an honorary firefighter who has caught the hearts of many—11-year-old Brooks Mixson. This spirited young man carries a heavy heart as he prepares to lace up his running shoes. His participation is more than just a race for him; it’s a personal mission of remembrance and respect.
A familiar face around the Irmo Fire Department, Brooks has spent years hanging out with local firefighters, starting when he was just five years old. His connection to firefighting runs deep, and this upcoming race holds a particularly special place in his heart. In April 2024, he visited New York City to see the 9/11 Memorial and Museum, which profoundly impacted him, cementing his dedication to honoring those who serve.
This year, Brooks is not only running to honor the memories of those fallen in 2001 but also to pay tribute to local hero James Muller. Firefighter Muller tragically lost his life while bravely battling a 3-alarm fire in 2023. Brooks expressed his sentiments beautifully, stating, “It’s a really special day for me. It really means a lot to me and all these firefighters that work within the state and country.” His heartfelt words truly reflect the spirit of this event and the community’s bond with their firefighters.
So, how can you get involved? The Tunnel to Towers 5K ceremony is set to kick off at 6 p.m. on race day, followed by the race itself starting at 7 p.m.. It’s a perfect opportunity for families, friends, and neighbors to come together, celebrate, and remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
As we prepare for this significant day, the community is encouraged to join in. Whether you’re running, walking, or simply cheering on participants, your presence will make a difference! It’s remarkable how events like these can unify us, reminding us of our shared values and the heroes who protect our way of life.
As Irmo gears up for this heartfelt event, let us honor not only Brooks and his dedication but also each firefighter who puts their life on the line every day. To be part of something bigger than ourselves, to remember and honor those who serve, and to foster community spirit is what this day is all about. So, mark your calendars and gather your community spirit for the Tunnel to Towers 5K—it promises to be an unforgettable evening that you won’t want to miss!
