Police activity outside Green Charter School following recent arrests.
The Irmo community is in turmoil following the arrests of a teacher and principal at the Green Charter School of the Midlands. Allegations against Sulaymaan Benoit include multiple counts of sexual misconduct involving minors, while Principal Tina Shaw faces charges for failure to report child abuse. The investigation reveals serious failures in maintaining student safety, raising urgent concerns among parents and authorities about the protection of children within educational institutions.
In a shocking turn of events, the town of Irmo is reeling after the recent arrests of a teacher and the principal from the Green Charter School of the Midlands. Sulaymaan Benoit, 32, who was both a teacher and the director of the after-school program, faces serious allegations, while Tina Shaw, 41, who led the school as its principal, is also in hot water.
Benoit is up against eight counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct. According to reports, he is accused of fondling three students between the ages of 7 and 12, and these incidents reportedly took place right on school grounds. This behavior is extremely alarming as children trust their teachers to provide a safe environment for learning and growth.
On the other hand, Principal Shaw has her own set of troubles. She is charged with failure to report child abuse and is facing two counts of second-degree assault and battery. These charges are particularly troubling given her position of authority and responsibility towards the students’ safety.
This investigation kicked off back in January when a parent reached out to the police with suspicion that their child had been assaulted. Upon digging deeper, investigators believe that the alleged abuse may have been occurring since as early as October, and there are concerns that it could have started around August of last year. This long duration makes the situation even more worrisome, raising questions about how such behavior could persist unchecked for so long.
Reports suggest that Shaw was aware of the allegations against Benoit and did inform her supervisor but failed to take the necessary next step of contacting law enforcement. This serious oversight is made even more egregious considering she is classified as a mandated reporter, meaning she had a legal obligation to alert authorities about the suspected abuse. In addition to her charges regarding not reporting abuse, the second-degree assault and battery charges relate to improper searches conducted on two students back in October. This raises even more eyebrows about her conduct in dealing with student safety.
The Irmo Police Department spearheaded the investigation, receiving support from the Richland County Sheriff’s Department and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED). It’s heartening to know that law enforcement took prompt action to protect the community and ensure that safety protocols are followed in schools.
Both Benoit and Shaw had their day in bond court, where Benoit’s bond was set at a staggering $75,000, while Shaw’s was somewhat lower at $50,000. To ensure safety, Benoit is prohibited from having any form of contact with children and must stay at least 1,000 yards away from the victims and any related venues. He is also required to wear a GPS monitoring device.
Meanwhile, Shaw was granted a personal recognizance bond and was released on the same day as their court hearing.
Authorities are concerned that there may be more victims out there and are urging any other students or staff members who may have information to come forward. The safety and well-being of children must be the priority, and it’s vital for the community to act collaboratively for their protection.
The executive director of Green Charter School stated that they are keeping a close watch over the situation and will provide further updates to the community as they become available.
In light of this distressing news, the Irmo Police Chief has encouraged parents to sit down with their children and have open conversations about their feelings and experiences at school, so any potential additional victims can come forward and feel supported. Trusting their instincts is crucial for children, and it’s essential for parents to reinforce that their voices matter.
This painful chapter in the Irmo community highlights the importance of vigilance, communication, and accountability within educational institutions, ensuring every child can feel safe and secure in their learning environment.
