As the sun sets on September 13, 2024, Irmo will be buzzing with excitement for the annual Tunnel to Towers 5K. This heartfelt event honors those who put their lives on the line for our safety, including first responders and military service members. Perhaps most poignantly, the race pays tribute to the 343 brave firefighters from the FDNY who lost their lives during the tragic events of September 11, 2001.
This year, an inspiring little hero, 11-year-old Brooks Mixson, will lace up his running shoes to honor not only the fallen firefighters of 9/11 but also a beloved local hero, Irmo firefighter James Muller. James tragically passed away in 2023 while bravely battling a 3-alarm fire. For Brooks, this race holds a special place in his heart. “It’s a really special day for me,” he shared. “It really means a lot to me and all these firefighters that work within the state and country.”
Brooks has been around the Irmo Fire Department since he was just five years old, spending countless hours with the firefighters, absorbing their stories and embracing their dedication to community safety. His passion pushed him to visit the 9/11 Memorial and Museum in New York City earlier this year, demonstrating his commitment to understand the sacrifices that first responders make. This journey only solidified his desire to participate in the Tunnel to Towers 5K.
Mark your calendars! The ceremony for the Tunnel to Towers 5K kicks off at 6 p.m., followed by the race itself starting at 7 p.m. This event is not just a race; it’s a chance to gather as a community, reflect on the past, and look toward a future where we continue to support and honor our heroes.
Participants can expect an evening filled with camaraderie, as runners and walkers come together to celebrate the sacrifices made by first responders throughout history. Brooks’ participation serves as a reminder that age doesn’t define one’s ability to honor and remember those who have sacrificed so much for our safety.
This year, more than ever, the community is encouraged to join in on the festivities. Whether you plan to run, walk, or simply cheer from the sidelines, this event strengthens our connection to each other and to those who protect us. The Tunnel to Towers event is a heartwarming reminder of the importance of community support and appreciation for our heroes.
So, whether you’re an avid runner, a casual participant, or simply someone who wants to show support, head on over to Irmo this September. It’s going to be a memorable evening dedicated to honoring not only the memories of those we’ve lost but also celebrating the resilience and bravery of all firefighters and first responders.
As we approach the day of the race, let’s carry in our hearts the stories of those we’ve lost and the bravery of those who continue to serve. Brooks Mixson’s dedication and commitment remind us that even the youngest among us can carry a torch of remembrance and honor. With every step taken during the Tunnel to Towers 5K, we not only celebrate their memory but also reaffirm our commitment to supporting the heroes among us.
