The close-knit community of Irmo is coming together in sorrow as they remember Orris Bickley, a devoted family man and cherished member of the local community, who recently passed away. Orris, a familiar face around town, graduated from Irmo High School in 1951, kicking off a life filled with achievements and heartfelt connections.
After his high school years, he continued his education at the University of South Carolina (USC) and Midlands College, setting up a solid foundation for his future. It was during these formative years that he crossed paths with Joan Shealy from Little Mountain. Their love blossomed, leading to a lovely wedding on May 5, 1956. The couple was blessed with two wonderful children, Wes and Cathy, who have fond memories of growing up in a lively home filled with love.
Orris embraced the joy of grandparenthood with open arms, becoming a proud grandfather to three grandchildren: Brandon Bickley, Courtney Bickley, and Harrison Brooks. The family tree continued to grow, bringing three delightful great-grandchildren into Orris’s life: Declan and Dalton Bickley, along with little Evelyn Brooks. Each generation valued his guidance, stories, and that warm smile that lit up family gatherings.
In his professional life, Orris was known for his dedication, retiring as a personal manager from General Electric Company after an impressive 41 years. He began his career as an auditor with the State Tax Commission, paving the way for a senior role that would leave a lasting mark in the company. Even after retirement, he continued to contribute to the community by serving as a member of the Lexington County Election Commission, helping to keep the electoral process fair and organized.
Orris was deeply involved in his faith community at Union United Methodist Church, where he spent countless hours giving back to both the church and its families. His multiple roles included singing in the choir, serving as an usher, and teaching Sunday School to children and adults alike. A testament to his commitment to service, he received the Jimmy Leitner, Sr. award on June 9, 2019, celebrating his unwavering contributions. Notably, Orris was a charter member of the Methodist Men organization, which started in March 1959, showcasing his passion for fostering community among men in the church.
Orris was not just a dedicated church member; he was also a beloved coach for local youth baseball and softball teams, where he nurtured young talent and forged friendships that lasted a lifetime. His passion for sports extended to golf, where he found great joy working as a ranger at various golf courses after hanging up his career hat.
After his retirement, Orris continued to put his warm personality to good use, serving as a greeter at Dunbar Funeral Home in Irmo, where many appreciated his welcoming spirit. He leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and dedication in the hearts of his family and friends.
He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Joan, as well as his children and grandchildren mentioned earlier, and a sister, Eva Mae Monts. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at 1:00 pm at Union United Methodist Church, with visitation to follow. The burial will take place in the church cemetery, where Orris can rest among those he held dear.
