Irmo Community Mourns the Passing of Esteemed Long-Time Resident, Orris Bickley

The beautiful town of Irmo is experiencing a profound loss as it bids farewell to one of its cherished residents, Orris Bickley. A figure who has touched many lives over the years, Orris passed away recently, leaving behind a legacy that many will remember fondly.

A Life Well-Lived

Orris graduated from Irmo High School in 1951 and went on to pursue higher education at the University of South Carolina and Midlands College. It was during this vibrant period of life that he met Joan Shealy from Little Mountain. Describing her as the love of his life, Orris and Joan united in marriage on May 5, 1956. Their bond stood the test of time and blossomed into a loving family.

Family First

The couple had two wonderful children, Wes and Cathy, who continue to carry on the family name. Orris’s pride didn’t stop there; he was also a devoted grandfather to three grandchildren—Brandon Bickley, Courtney Bickley, and Harrison Brooks. The joys of his life multiplied with the arrival of three great-grandchildren: Declan, Dalton, and Evelyn.

A Dedicated Professional

Orris dedicated an impressive 41 years to the General Electric Company, where he made his mark as a personal manager. Prior to this, he served as an auditor with the State Tax Commission. His professional life was a testament to his commitment and hard work, traits that endeared him to many.

Devotion to Community and Faith

His devotion extended beyond his family and workplace; Orris was deeply involved in the Union United Methodist Church. He participated in various roles, including being a choir member, usher, and Sunday school teacher for both children and adults. His service didn’t go unnoticed, as he was honored with the Jimmy Leitner, Sr. award in June 2019 for his contributions to the church. A charter member of the Methodist Men, which was organized in March 1959, he also acted as a lay speaker, providing leadership to churches that lacked a pastor.

Making Memories Through Coaching

For many in the community, Orris was not just a figure of faith but also of sports. He coached various youth baseball and softball teams, forming lifelong friendships through these activities. Whether he was cheering from the sidelines or teaching kids the ropes, Orris created bonds that everyone would treasure.

A Passionate Golfer

After retirement, Orris indulged in another passion—golf. He worked as a ranger at local golf courses, enjoying the great outdoors and connecting with others who shared his love for the game.

A Life of Service

In addition to his various roles within the church and community, Orris was appointed a commissioner on the Lexington County Election Commission. His heart for service didn’t stop there; he also served as a greeter at Dunbar Funeral Home in Irmo, welcoming families during difficult times.

A Celebration of Life

Orris is survived by his wonderful wife, Joan, who stood by him for 68 years, their children Wes (with his wife Michelle) and Cathy (along with her husband Jerry), three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and his sister Eva Mae Monts.

Final Goodbyes

A funeral service to celebrate Orris’s extraordinary life is being held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at Union United Methodist Church, where so many of his contributions took shape. Visitation will follow the service, and he will be buried in the church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Orris’s memory can make contributions to Union United Methodist Church, located at 7582 Woodrow Street, Irmo, SC 29063.

Orris Bickley’s love, commitment, and unwavering spirit will be sorely missed, yet his impact on the Irmo community will forever remain in the hearts of those he touched.
