Irmo Choir Hits the High Notes at Carnegie Hall!

In a thrilling moment for the community of Irmo, the Irmo High School Concert Choir recently brought their talents to the prestigious Carnegie Hall in New York City! Performing on a Sunday, a dedicated group of 23 students took to the stage, joining around 170 other singers from all across the country for an unforgettable concert experience.

A Performance with Purpose

The highlight of the concert was a moving piece titled “A Vision Unfolding,” composed by Kyle Pederson. This composition delves into the essential theme of social justice, showcasing the choir’s commitment not just to music but also to powerful messages that resonate with audiences. The event was masterfully conducted by Kenny Potter, a talented conductor hailing from the Charlotte area.

Among the talented ensemble, senior Sophie Johnson-Distefano stood out by being selected to perform in a special solo group. This honor reflects the hard work and dedication of the choir members, and especially Sophie, whose passion for music shone brightly during the concert.

Hard Work Pays Off

The students representing Irmo High School were all part of the school’s International School for the Arts. The choir included these talented individuals: Ava Alsup, Baylie Batchelor, Anasia Bryant, Summer Daniels, Jonas Dillon-Sauer, Taylor Ellis, Chloe Erwin, Emmalyn Grant, Isabella Howe, Liana Joseph, Danielle Lawrence, Malia Lewis, Abby Mazzei, Ciara Moorer, Jacob Quinones, Jayden Samuels, Meadow Sapienza-Chaney, Khloe Seabrooks, Cherish Taylor, Christiana Valdez, Zerachiel Valdez, and Viviana Zavala. Each member contributed to a harmonious atmosphere that captivated the audience.

The choir’s director, Frank Turner, expressed immense pride in the effort and professionalism displayed by every student. Balancing a rigorous practice schedule alongside participation in All-State Chorus, Concert Performance Assessments, and school musicals takes immense dedication. The choir had worked tirelessly to prepare a complete 35-minute performance, and it clearly showed during the concert.

Praise from the Conductor

Kenny Potter, who attended a dress rehearsal, praised the students’ enthusiasm and commitment to making the performance a success. He noted how well-prepared they were, making it evident that their hard work had been key to their success at such a renowned venue.

A Trip to Remember

The excitement didn’t stop with the concert! The students had the fantastic opportunity to experience a showing of “The Lion King” on Broadway. This was not only a treat for the eyes and ears but also an inspiring adventure for budding artists. To make the experience even more special, the students met cast member Ezekiel McCall! This encounter created buzz and lifted the spirits of young performers dreaming of their own places on stage one day.

Continued Passion for the Arts

Many of the choir members also take part in other musical productions at Irmo High School, and this trip to Carnegie Hall has served to renew their passions. Immersing in musical experiences like these fuels their commitment to the art of singing and the pursuit of excellence in performance.
