Two South Carolina women are facing a future filled with uncertainty after pleading guilty to a serious crime that has left both the communities of Clinton and Columbia shocked. Monesha Tatayana Lapri Gary, 24, from Clinton, and Rebecca Melanie Perry, 30, from Columbia, admitted to their roles in a disturbing conspiracy involving the recruitment and exploitation of minors for commercial sex work.
The duo appeared before U.S. District Judge Sherri A. Lydon and confessed to participating in a human trafficking conspiracy alongside two other individuals, Antonia Marquis Nicholson and Terrell Counts. For a minimum of eight months, they allegedly worked together to use three minors as sex workers, manipulating and controlling them in a sickening manner.
According to a release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for South Carolina, the group utilized the internet to coordinate their activities, which included advertising services, making bookings, communicating with clients, and collecting payments for their exploitation of these young victims.
Gary and Perry could face life imprisonment if sentenced accordingly, alongside hefty fines reaching up to $250,000, lifetime supervision upon release, and the added burden of mandatory sex-offender registry requirements. As part of their plea agreement, both women are expected to pay restitution to the victims involved.
Judge Lydon has accepted their pleas, but sentencing will come later following a thorough examination of a sentencing report. Meanwhile, indictments against their co-defendants, Nicholson and Counts, remain pending. The case has stressed the importance of addressing issues surrounding human trafficking, especially when it involves the vulnerable youth in our communities.
Investigations into the affair have revealed harrowing details about how the minors were recruited. One particularly chilling instance involved one minor being lured by Nicholson and Perry at a hotel after she had run away from home. The pair drove her across state lines and proceeded to tell her that she would be engaging in commercial sex work. They even went so far as to buy her lingerie and take photos of her for advertising purposes, showcasing the extreme levels of manipulation involved in this tragic scenario.
The control exerted over these minors was downright frightening. Nicholson reportedly set the prices for their services and was involved in collecting payments as well as deciding how the cash acquired from their exploitation would be distributed among the victims. Gary took on the role of posing as a minor when communicating with clients, ensuring she was directly involved in transporting the minors and resolving any issues that arose during transactions. Similarly, Perry’s participation helped keep the operation running smoothly.
As if the betrayal wasn’t enough, the minors faced severe physical and psychological conditions during their time in this operation. One victim, in particular, endured physical abuse, while several members of the conspiracy were armed and involved in distributing drugs around the minors, creating an environment ripe for fear and control.
This disturbing case was brought to light thanks to the tireless efforts of multiple law enforcement agencies, including Homeland Security Investigations, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, and the South Carolina Attorney General’s Office. Their work highlights the ever-pressing need to combat human trafficking and provide a safe environment for our most vulnerable population.
This troubling situation serves as a stark reminder that human trafficking can occur in any community, and it is crucial for everyone to stay vigilant and informed. As Gary and Perry prepare for the potential consequences of their actions, there remains a heavy burden on their shoulders as they face the reality of their choices. The hope is that this harrowing case will spark conversations around prevention and protection for the minors who sometimes feel trapped in vulnerable situations.
