Columbia is buzzing with excitement as The Vista, one of the city’s liveliest entertainment areas, gears up for a spectacular hotel boom! This charming neighborhood, which once featured old warehouses and factories, is transforming before our very eyes. Thanks to a surge in tourism and a growing demand for accommodations, hotel development is on the rise, promising to bring more visitors to this vibrant district.
Don’t you love it when history gets a fresh twist? The Vista has plenty of century-old buildings that developers are breathing new life into, all while taking advantage of glorious historic tax credits. Alia Bostaji, a local realtor who specializes in hospitality projects, shared how these credits can really help developers manage construction costs, making projects more feasible.
“If you can apply some historic credits to your project, that will offset the higher construction costs,” she mentioned. Sounds like a win-win, right?
It seems like there’s no shortage of new hotel projects on the horizon. The Homewood Suites and Tru by Hilton is making waves as it nears completion at the vibrant intersection of Gervias and Williams streets. This fabulous seven-story establishment will boast 249 rooms, catering to both leisure and business travelers alike. Expected to open in January 2025, it’s already catching the interest of visitors looking for a cozy stay!
Just a hop and a skip away, right at the corner of Huger and Senate streets, a cozy four-story hotel is in the works with plans for 123 rooms. Not only that, but it will feature a gym and dining area, complete with a covered patio to unwind after exploring The Vista. However, local residents have voiced some concerns over traffic and neighborhood congestion. But, as we all know, progress sometimes has its bumps in the road!
Now, let’s not forget about the charming boutique hotels making their way into The Vista. The team behind Hotel Trundle is planning a chic new spot right at the former Epes-Fitzgerald Paper Company site on Gadsden Street. They’ve targeted an opening date of early 2026, promising to blend historic charm with modern hospitality. Talk about a unique stay!
Also on the horizon is The Shepherd, a boutique hotel that will occupy the old Columbia Central Fire Station. Scheduled for a groundbreaking ceremony on November 14, this design aims to preserve the history of the building while transforming it into a 60-room oasis for visitors. A perfect addition to the buzzing neighborhood!
And what about the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center? This central hub for events has long been in need of a hotel nearby to accommodate the influx of visitors. There have been talks to finally build a hotel right next to the convention center, which would surely increase Columbia’s appeal for multi-day events and bigger conventions. With changes in zoning laws on the table, it’s a key moment for our fair city!
The Vista Guild, representing local business owners, is waving the flag of support for these exciting developments. Guild President Abby Anderson emphasized the importance of having a full-service hotel to cater to the bustling activities within The Vista. “What sparked all that was the potential for a convention center hotel,” she said, highlighting the community’s desire for further expansion.
As we watch The Vista transformation unfold, it’s clear that Columbia is rolling out the red carpet for visitors. With an array of hotels on the way and the community rallying around growth, this charming neighborhood is poised to become a hotbed of activity that blends the old with the new.
So, whether you’re a local or planning a visit, The Vista is shaping up to be the perfect place to stay, play, and discover. Grab your bags—exciting adventures await!
