Revolutionary Store with Amazon Technology Opens at Prisma Health Children’s Hospital in Columbia

COLUMBIA, SC – A Revolutionary New Shopping Experience for Hospital Staff and Guests

Imagine strolling into a shop, grabbing whatever you need, and just walking out—no lines, no cashiers—sounds great, right? Well, this dream is now a reality at Prisma Health’s Richland campus in Columbia! The brand-new store, which opens its doors on September 26th, is nestled inside the Prisma Health Children’s Hospital, located at 7 Richland Medical Park Drive.

Powered by Amazon’s Innovative Technology

This remarkable store is powered by Amazon’s innovative “Just Walk Out” technology. It aims to provide a hassle-free shopping experience, especially for doctors, nurses, and guests who might find themselves in need of a quick snack or meal amid their hectic schedules. Armed with the convenience of 24-hour access, patients and staff can choose from a variety of ready-to-eat, healthy food options.

A Quick and Stress-Free Solution

Regina Brown, the Community Engagement Manager for Prisma Health Midlands, expressed her enthusiasm for this new initiative. “I think it’s a great idea,” she shared. “Our team members have such a limited amount of time for lunch and dinner. And so to be able to walk in here, scan your card, grab your food, and go right back out is going to be a tremendous help to our team members. There’s not a long line that we’re waiting for in the cafeteria; it’s just a quick grab and go.”

Leaders at Prisma Health recognize that the expansive size and specific location of the Richland campus often make it impractical for staff, particularly third-shift workers, to go off-site for meals. The new store resolves this issue, allowing employees to simply scan their preferred payment card before entering and shop freely.

How It Works

So how does this cutting-edge store work? The magic happens with the help of nearly 60 cameras installed on the ceiling. These cameras keep track of the items customers select or return. Once shoppers decide on their items and exit the store, the total amount is automatically charged to their chosen payment card. It’s just that easy!

A Much-Needed Break for Employees

Michael Bundy, CEO of the Prisma Health Midlands Market, believes that this staffless store will provide employees and guests a much-needed outlet to recharge. “If you’re at our hospital and it’s three in the morning, and you need 15 minutes to take a break, and you just want a healthy snack, or some comfort food even, to get your mind reset, and have a mental health moment, this is gonna give you that option, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week,” Bundy said.

Collaboration for Convenience

The store is a collaborative effort between Prisma Health and its food service provider, Morrison Healthcare. Together, they are committed to keeping the store stocked with a diverse array of food and beverage options to satisfy every craving.

An Exciting Addition to Healthcare

This new opening marks an exciting milestone, as it becomes the third Amazon retail site in the U.S. to launch within a healthcare facility. All employees and guests alike are eagerly anticipating a significantly improved shopping experience. “Come get your food, they’ll be ready, they’re open, it was easy. I just scanned my card and out the door I went,” Brown added with a smile.

With the anticipation building, there’s no doubt that this novel shopping concept will not only enhance the daily routines of hospital staff but will also uplift and energize everyone who visits this special facility.
