Remembering Carolyn Ann (Sawyer) Davenport
Lexington, SC – In a heartfelt goodbye, family and friends gathered to remember the life of Carolyn Ann (Sawyer) Davenport, a dedicated educator, loving mother, and cherished member of her community, who passed away peacefully on September 21, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. Born in 1938 in the small town of Johnston, South Carolina, Carolyn was the daughter of the late Horace Witt Sawyer and Voila Mae Allen. Throughout her life, she was known for her warm heart, commitment to education, and passion for music.
A Lifelong Education Advocate
Following her graduation from Edgefield High School, Carolyn pursued higher education at the University of South Carolina, where she laid the foundation for a successful career in teaching. She later earned her Master’s Degree from Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida, further exemplifying her dedication to education which was a core value of her upbringing.
Carolyn’s teaching career took her across various cities, where she left a significant impact on students in high schools and middle schools, including in Clemson, Johnston, and Norfolk, Virginia. In 1973, she moved to Orlando, Florida, where she continued sharing her knowledge and wisdom as a guidance counselor at several local schools, including Apopka High School and Glenridge Middle School.
Music and Community Service
A gifted pianist who learned to play mostly by ear, Carolyn first discovered her love for music at the First Baptist Church in Edgefield and later at the Johnston First Baptist Church.
Once settled in Orlando, she became an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where she contributed her time and talents. After retiring and moving to Lexington, she became deeply involved with Pilgrim Lutheran Church. At Pilgrim, she took on various roles, including serving on the church council, joining the Stephen Ministry, and teaching Sunday School for many years. Carolyn’s enthusiasm for community service was also evident through her volunteer work with local non-profits, particularly Mission Lexington.
A Devoted Family Member
Family was everything to Carolyn. She dedicated her life to providing opportunities for her children, ensuring they had all they needed to succeed. Her children, Cecelia Lynn (Maxwell) Fehner, Richard Sawyer Maxwell, Ann Carolyn Davenport, and stepson Robert (Bobby) Everett Davenport, Jr., as well as her grandchildren, were her pride and joy.
Despite her deep-rooted loyalty to the Gamecocks, attending many USC football games with family, Carolyn was proud of her grandchildren’s accomplishments, even when several chose to graduate from rival school Clemson. Her fun-loving nature was infectious, and she enjoyed attending music performances and sports events where her grandkids showcased their talents.
Final Farewell
A service to honor Carolyn’s life will be held on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, at 11:00 AM at Pilgrim Lutheran Church located at 1430 Northlake Dr., Lexington, SC. Following the service, she will be laid to rest at Mt. of Olives Cemetery at 1:30 PM. Friends and family are invited to visit from 10 AM to 11 AM before the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requested donations be made to Mission Lexington, a cause close to Carolyn’s heart. She believed in giving back and serving her community, and her legacy will continue through the lives she touched.
As we reflect on the vibrant life of Carolyn Sawyer Davenport, we remember her as a loving mother, devoted educator, cherished friend, and passionate community member. May her spirit continue to inspire those who had the honor of knowing her.
