Shop Smart: Essential Safety Tips for Holiday Shoppers in Lexington, S.C.

Shop Smart this Holiday Season in Lexington, S.C.

It’s that time of the year again in Lexington, S.C.! Families are buzzing around, gathering together, and preparing for the great Thanksgiving feast. Once the turkey leftovers are tucked away, everyone knows what’s next — the holiday shopping frenzy kicks off! While the excitement is palpable, the season also brings forth its own set of challenges, particularly in the safety department. So, before you rush off to snag those holiday deals, let’s have a chat about keeping yourself, your belongings, and your personal information safe.

Stay Alert: Safety Tips from the Sheriff

Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon is ringing the alarm bells on the need for vigilance this holiday season. “This time of year always brings concerns for safety and security,” he stated. “The holiday season could make you a prime target for crooks looking to steal your money, your merchandise or even your identity.”

Thanks to Sheriff Koon, here are some smart shopping tips that can help keep you secure while you browse those fabulous holiday sales:

  • Shop with a buddy! Solo shoppers are often the prime target for theft. Always have a friend or relative accompany you.
  • Check-in with someone! Let a family member know where you’ll be shopping and when they should expect you back. Don’t forget to tell them what you’re wearing and your vehicle details.
  • Keep cash close! Tuck your cash in your front pocket instead of a purse or wallet. This way, pick-pockets will have a tougher time making off with your money.
  • Trust your instincts! If you feel uncomfortable heading back to your vehicle alone, don’t hesitate to find a security guard to escort you.

Be Wary of Financial Fraud

During the busy holiday shopping season, it’s easy to get lost in the excitement. But as Sheriff Koon pointed out, it’s also the perfect moment for financial fraud crimes to creep in.

Here are some more precautions you should take to protect your financial details:

  • Watch your cards! Keep a close eye on your credit and debit cards every time you use them. Return them to your wallet promptly.
  • No PIN writing! Don’t even think about writing your PIN down on your card. It’s too risky!
  • Keep it tidy! Avoid leaving your cards or receipts lying around.
  • Shield those numbers! Always shield your card as you make a purchase to prevent others from copying your card number or snapping a picture.
  • Only carry the essentials! Only take the cards that you absolutely need with you.
  • Shred sensitive stuff! It’s wise to shred anything that has your card number or other personal information on it. Better safe than sorry!

Beware of Gift Card Scams

As we all know, gift cards have become a fun and popular gift option over the years. However, they’ve also turned into a favorite target for scammers looking to drain your wallet. Sheriff Koon is here to remind us all about the importance of ensuring that our gift cards are safe when we purchase them.

Remember, if you spot any suspicious activity in or around a store, do not hesitate to call 911. In case you fall victim to fraudulent financial activity, reach out to the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department at 803-785-8230.

The key to a joyful holiday shopping experience is to stay alert, plan wisely, and keep safety at the top of your mind. Happy shopping, Lexington! Let’s make this holiday season merry and secure!
