SAVANNAH, Ga. – After being closed down for nearly two weeks due to flooding caused by Tropical Storm Debby, Highway 17 has now reopened, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT).
The highway had been flooded as water levels from the Ogeechee River rose significantly, resulting in part of the road being submerged. This incident formed part of a series of floods caused by the storm, affecting many other roads in the region.
GDOT has stated that they will continue to monitor the condition of the roadway to ensure safety. During the closure, crews were deployed to inspect the damage and assess the drainage system on the shoulder of the highway.
The reopening of Highway 17 comes after diligent efforts by crews to restore the road’s integrity, but repairs will proceed to further ensure the highway’s condition, according to GDOT.
In addition to making repairs, GDOT has stated that continuous monitoring will be conducted to ensure the roadway remains safe for all traffic. This is a measure aimed at preventing any potential future disruptions on the highway, prioritizing the safety of motorists.
Tropical Storm Debby caused extensive damage throughout the region, and the reopening of Highway 17 marks a significant step towards recovery.
