WASHINGTON — Dobbing controversy in the political atmosphere of an election year, a conspiracy theory has been stirred by a Republican group advocating for Project 2025. The group suggests that the sitting President, Joe Biden, may use ‘force’ to keep his position in power should he lose the November election. This claim disregards the President’s public commitment to honor the election results.
The conservative think tank, The Heritage Foundation, backs the Republicans of Project 2025. In a report from a role-playing exercise that projected scenarios for the 2024 elections onwards, it accuses the current administration’s approach to staffing, dealing with border matters, and disregard for certain court rulings.
The report’s warning is exceptional considering its timing just four months shy of the presidential election and ahead of the Republican National Convention. This warning acts as a mirror, reflecting accusations the Democrats have made against the Republicans.
The Heritage Foundation alongside other staunch Trump supporters continue to endorse the unfounded theories of election fraud, the same theories that contributed to Trump’s attempts to remain in office following his loss to Biden in 2020. These attempts ultimately led to the infamous January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol.
However, not everyone agrees with the think tank’s warning. Election law experts, politicians and fact-checkers have pointed out the lack of evidence suggesting that Biden has any intention to cling to power if he loses.
Backing their leader, Biden’s campaign has come forward and directly rejected the group’s claim. The President’s press secretary, Karine Jean-Pierre, previously reassured the public about Biden’s intention to respect the decision made by American citizens.
The campaign goes further, accusing Project 2025 of setting the stage to disrupt another election using their projection as a justification to undermine the electoral process and suppress the vote.
The Heritage Foundation’s report is revealing of potential attempts to seed doubt in public institutions that protect the integrity of the election. While all the claims in the report remain hypothetical, the power to shape voter perceptions and norms raises concern among observers and opponents.
As we approach this election, the tension between parties has amplified, and the role of influence from third-party contributions has brought even more uncertainty. The politicization of important democratic processes such as elections and transitions has proven to be a highly charged issue, leading to a question of how these upcoming events will unfold.
