COLUMBIA, S.C. – Controversy has erupted over a scheduled roast of Vice President and Democratic Presidential nominee Kamala Harris due to the involvement of Proud Boys founder Gavin McInnes and controversial speaker Milo Yiannopoulos. The event, planned for September 18, is organized by Uncensored America, a student organization at the University of South Carolina (USC).
Controversy and Backlash
Alumni and some legislators have criticized the University administration for allowing such an event, with a petition protesting the event gaining over 15,000 signatures, far exceeding its initial goal of just 1,000. Critics claim that the university’s response has inadequately addressed the concerns of minority students and other marginalized communities on campus.
Concerns of Censorship
However, Governor Henry McMaster defended the university’s position, declaring that the institution lacked the right to cancel speech, barring instances where speech could directly harm others. Legal authorities warn that cancelling the event could expose the university to potential lawsuits.
An Interview with McInnes
In an exclusive interview, McInnes spoke about the upcoming event. He insisted that he would not be bringing hate to the comedy roast and, instead, claimed the left were the ones who “burnt down this country for two years straight. We had one riot on January 6.”
When asked about the content of the roast, McInnes stated it wouldn’t exactly resemble a classic roast, but rather, it would poke fun at “what could be the worst president in American history.”
