Free Legal Assistance Offered to Hurricane Helene Survivors in Lexington County

Free Legal Help Available for Hurricane Helene Survivors in Lexington County

Lexington County, SC – If you or someone you know has been affected by Hurricane Helene, there’s some good news. A free legal help hotline has been launched specifically for survivors dealing with disaster-related legal issues in several counties, including Lexington. This initiative is a collaborative effort from the American Bar Association Young Lawyers Division, the South Carolina Bar, and South Carolina Legal Services.

Who Can Benefit?

The hotline is designed for residents in counties declared disaster areas by FEMA, such as Abbeville, Aiken, Allendale, Anderson, and many others, including our very own Lexington County. If you’re struggling with legal matters related to the hurricane and don’t have the means to hire a lawyer, this service could be just what you need.

How It Works

To access the assistance, you can simply call (803) 576-3815 and leave a message. Make sure to mention that you’re looking for disaster-related legal assistance. It’s helpful if you provide a brief description of the issue, your contact information, and the county you live in. If you meet the criteria, you’ll be matched with a volunteer lawyer who specializes in the legal challenges you’re facing.

What Kind of Help Can You Get?

The hotline covers a wide range of legal issues that might come up after the storm, such as:

  • FEMA and SBA financial benefits
  • Home repair contracts and property insurance claims
  • Replacing wills and other important legal documents that may have been destroyed
  • Price gouging, scams, or identity theft
  • Landlord-tenant issues or threats of foreclosure
  • Accessibility challenges to federal, state, and local disaster programs

Wow, that is quite a list! Surviving a hurricane is tough enough, and having reliable legal support can really help ease some of that burden.

How to Get Help Online

If calling isn’t your preferred method, you can also request help online. Just send an email to DisasterInfo@SCBar.org or visit SCFreeLegalAnswers.org to submit your questions. It’s all about making sure you have the support you need in the way that works best for you.

Important Notes

While hotline partners can’t assist with every legal situation (like cases that could include settlements or fees), they are happy to refer you to other resources if needed. If you’re in a pickle with a legal matter outside of hurricane-related issues, don’t hesitate to reach out to South Carolina Legal Services directly at (888) 346-5592.

Multilingual Support Available

For those who may need help in languages other than English, nearly all resources are accessible in Spanish as well. Our community should never feel alone in seeking help, and language should not be a barrier.

Keep the Communication Going!

The hotline is there for you anytime, so don’t hesitate to leave a message whenever you need assistance. Reaching out can be the first step towards getting back to normal after the chaos of a storm.

If you have questions or need further assistance, feel free to reach out through the hotline or online options. Remember, you are not in this alone, and there are dedicated professionals ready to help you navigate these challenging times.
