Flood Advisory Issued for Columbia as Rainfall Continues

Hey there, Columbia! As we cozy up for the weekend, we’ve got some important news to share about the weather. On Friday evening, the National Weather Service (NWS) in Columbia, South Carolina, issued an updated flood advisory that’s in effect until Monday at 1 a.m. This advisory comes as a direct result of heavy rainfall impacting our beloved Congaree River. Let’s dive into what this means for our community.

What’s Happening?

If you’ve been out and about recently, you might have noticed the water levels rising, especially around the Congaree River here in Columbia. According to the NWS, flooding is forecasted to continue, especially in flood-prone areas near and downstream. As the river hits around 10.0 feet, parts of the Cayce and West Columbia river walk are starting to see water overflow. So for those planning a stroll, it’s best to stay away from the riverbanks as things can get slippery!

Safety First!

Your safety is the top priority, Columbia! For those living in or near low-lying areas, or if you’re out camping, now is the time to take some swift action. The NWS is urging everyone to seek higher ground immediately, especially if you’re in an area known for flooding. Remember to follow any evacuation instructions without delay. And just a little heads up: if you’re headed out, wind up locking your doors and checking the appliances, just to be extra safe.

While we’re on the topic of what to avoid, please do not enter basements or rooms where water may have infiltrated electrical outlets. If you see any sparks or hear funny sounds like buzzing or crackling, it’s time to evacuate instantly. If you’re caught in rising waters, make sure to find the highest point and reach out to emergency services; do not hesitate to call 911 if needed!

Avoid the Water, Stay Safe!

Speaking of water, here’s an important tip: even if the water looks shallow, don’t drive through it! Believe it or not, just 12 inches of moving water can sweep away most cars. And we don’t want that! In case you don’t know, hydroplaning is when your car glides on top of the water, making it super tricky to steer. This happens when the water builds up too quickly in front of your tires, and your car can lose traction. It’s a scary situation that can happen in the blink of an eye!

If you ever find yourself hydroplaning, the best thing to do is to stay calm. Here’s a pro tip: don’t jerk the steering wheel; instead, ease off the gas and steer in the direction you want to go. You’ll stay in control better that way!

Keep an Eye Out

As drivers hit the roads this weekend, keep in mind that weather conditions can change rapidly. So, please stay updated on the latest from local weather services and keep that umbrella close by! Another advisory is set to be released Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m., so make sure to check in before making any plans.

So there you have it, folks! As we prepare for the rain-filled days ahead, let’s make safety our number one priority. Stay dry, stay safe, and take care of each other out there, Columbia!
