Columbia, SC – A dramatic scene unfolded Sunday afternoon as a fire at a local dump caused officials to close a section of Farrow Road, much to the surprise of many drivers navigating the area. The Columbia Fire Department reported that the eastern road was closed in both directions north of the junction with Interstate 20 at Exit 72 around 4:05 PM.
According to the fire department, the blaze erupted at the GFL Environmental waste disposal site located at 7800 Farrow Road. Firefighters were called to the scene shortly before 3:15 PM, and as flames spread rapidly, the situation quickly escalated to a 2-alarm fire, prompting a call for additional support. “All hands were on deck battling the flames!” said a representative from the fire department.
By around 5:10 PM, the good news came that the fire was contained, although fire crews remained on site working diligently to ensure that it wouldn’t flare up again. Thankfully, there were only four workers present when the fire broke out, and in a stroke of luck, no injuries were reported.
The thick smoke from the burning debris was visible across the sky, adding to the chaotic atmosphere as neighbors watched the unfolding drama. As for how this fire started, the investigation is just beginning. The Richland County Fire Marshal will be coordinating efforts to determine the cause of the fire, while the South Carolina Department of Public Health has also been alerted since the incident occurred at a waste management facility.
Despite the raging fire, officials have yet to provide updates on whether this unfortunate incident will impact the scheduled trash and recycling pickups for the upcoming week. Residents are encouraged to check local announcements to stay in the loop.
For those commuting through the area, the closure is, understandably, a cause for concern. Traffic was diverted as firefighters worked hard to keep the flames under control and make the site safe once more.Drivers are advised to seek alternate routes while the situation is being managed.
In the days to come, it might be necessary to stay tuned for updates as investigators dig deeper into this incident. As everyone knows, fire situations can be unpredictable, and new information could rapidly change the course of events.
As this story develops, it marks another unexpected twist in our city’s ongoing narrative. With concerns about safety and environmental impacts high on the minds of many, residents are encouraged to check back regularly for the latest updates. Remember, folks— this is a developing story!
Stay safe, Columbia! Officials are doing their best to keep everyone informed, and we can only hope that as more information surfaces, clarity and assurance will prevail.
