Fall Festivities in Columbia Breached by Hurricane Helene
Ah, fall in Columbia! A time of year when the crisp air brings joy as our weekends fill with an array of festivals and events. While this is usually the season we look forward to, it also comes with its fair share of challenges. One of the most prominent challenges this September? The looming presence of Hurricane Helene. Nothing like a tropical storm now and then to keep us on our toes!
Hurricane Helene’s Threat
Currently making its way toward the Gulf Coast of Florida, Hurricane Helene is on course to make landfall Thursday evening. This storm isn’t just a distant worry for coastal Floridians; it’s creeping its way towards the Midlands, bringing with it the threat of severe weather conditions including possible tornadoes and flooding. As rain has already begun to saturate our area, it has left many Columbia residents anxious about what’s in store for the weekend.
Cancellations Come Pouring In
As if on cue with the pending storm, the ripple effects are already being felt in local festivities. Take, for example, our much-loved Okra Strut festival in Irmo. Known for its vibrant atmosphere and celebration of all things okra, this festival usually draws a huge crowd. Unfortunately, amidst travel difficulties caused by Hurricane Helene, the lively New Orleans roots rock band, Cowboy Mouth, has canceled their scheduled show for Friday evening.
Just after the announcement of their cancellation, festival organizers promptly informed attendees that all Okra Strut programming for Friday is officially called off. However, the good news is that Saturday isn’t a total washout! The festival plans to continue with the annual parade, filled with floats, smiles, and perhaps a few surprises. The cover band Absolute Queen will also take center stage as planned for the evening concert, giving fans an opportunity to rock out to some iconic hits.

We’ll take the good with the challenging and celebrate the beautiful things—the vibrant colors of leaves, warm gatherings, and sweet moments with friends and family.
