The heart of Columbia is finally seeing some action on a much-anticipated luxury apartment complex that’s been on the drawing board for quite a while. The project, which is set to rise at 2222 Main Street—previously the home of the old Jim Moore Cadillac dealership—is making a comeback and is even bigger than before!
Let’s rewind a bit. The initial plans for this major revitalization were approved back in 2021. Developer Steve Middleton, president of Commonwealth Properties, had big dreams of creating the “nicest” apartments in Columbia. Think luxurious living spaces with stunning 12-foot high ceilings, elegant crown molding, and attractive amenities that include a swimming pool and a heated spa area.
However, the journey has been far from smooth sailing. The project faced significant delays due to the daunting task of cleaning up environmental hazards left behind by the former auto shop. To top it all off, rising construction costs made it difficult to stick to the original plans.
But fear not, Columbia residents! Developers have figured out a new game plan. The updated project will now feature a larger building with 320 luxury apartments, an increase from the initial 250 units. These apartments will range from one to three bedrooms, with an average size of 929 square feet. And don’t worry—the amazing amenities like beautiful courtyards, a lavish pool, a soothing spa, and sunny sundecks are still on the table!
In a delightful twist, the plans include some exciting additions such as a rooftop dog park, a rooftop club room, and game room, plus not one, but two rooftop decks. Just imagine sipping your favorite drink while enjoying breathtaking views of the swimming pool courtyard and stunning downtown Columbia sunsets!
And if you’re worried about parking, there’s no need to fret! The development will include a sprawling 467-unit parking garage alongside an additional surface parking lot featuring 47 spots. That’s plenty of room for residents and their guests!
The enthusiasm isn’t just one-sided. The Cottontown Bellevue Historic District Neighborhood Association has thrown their support behind the project. Their heartening letter, dated November 8, 2024, highlights their ongoing communication with Middleton and their backing of the development since day one.
As the planning commission prepares to evaluate these proposals during their upcoming meeting, they’re also looking into potential street improvements to enable better traffic flow in the area. A traffic study suggests adding new turn lanes on North Main Street and adjusting southbound traffic to a single lane between Confederate Avenue and Elmwood Avenue, all to make accessibility smoother for everyone.
Residents have the opportunity to weigh in on Thursday during the Planning Commission meeting. You can join in person at 1737 Main Street or tune in online via YouTube. This is your chance to get involved in shaping the future of Columbia!
The once-dormant site at 2222 Main Street is finally coming to life, promising to provide Columbia with a much-needed infusion of luxury living. As the development gains momentum, it brings hope not just for prospective residents, but for the entire community looking forward to a vibrant future. Here’s to new beginnings!
