Exciting New Indie Horror Film Premieres in Columbia
Columbia, SC, is gearing up for an exciting event as the world premiere of a unique, homegrown indie horror flick approaches! Titled “Pater Noster and the Mission of Light,” this film is unlike anything you’ve seen before, and it’s set to captivate audiences on October 5 at the Independent Picture House.
What’s the Buzz About?
Written, directed, and produced by the talented local filmmaker Christopher Bickel, this movie features a distinct story that revolves around a fictional cult. You might be surprised to hear that the lead-up to this film involved a cast of passionate locals, many of whom have also dedicated their time and talents to create a compelling story. As an extra in the film, I experienced firsthand the creative energy and community spirit that drove this project forward.
While the movie promises plenty of thrills and chills, it’s essential to note that no actual metal musicians or record shop employees were harmed during filming—though they may have experienced a dose of clever filmmaking magic! This film contains splashes of horror mixed with humor and a rebellious spirit that is characteristic of Bickel’s previous works.
A Community Effort
It’s important to emphasize the heart and support that went into making this film come to life. Under Bickel’s direction, scores of enthusiasts involved in Midlands film, punk music, and various arts rallied together to invest not only their donations but also their time and skills. Bickel seemed like a magnet, drawing together individuals who burned bright with creativity and hope.
Weeks of Saturday and Sunday shooting unfolded during the hot summer months of May to July, utilizing various local spaces. From Papa Jazz Records to an old warehouse in Lexington County that donned the appearance of a cult laboratory, every location contributed to building the eerie vibe.
Filming Adventures
Filming kicked off at Eastwind Castle, a charming medieval-style village where film and medieval enthusiasts gather for festivals. Characters dressed as cult members navigated through the intricacies of the plot amidst the backdrop of enchanting scenery. This perfect yet rugged setting initially seemed daunting; camping overnight in the woods as a fake cult member was a thought many pondered, but thanks to great camaraderie, we made our way through the filming process.
Throughout the weeks, another crew member, Dwayne Brantley, took charge of transporting equipment and offering his support. It’s the kind of spirit that exemplified the entire crew’s dedication, with food flowing freely—everything from sandwiches and snacks to hearty dinners which kept everyone energized while working in the sweltering heat.
Creative Chaos and Collaboration
This indie horror flick delves deeply into themes of cultism, madness, and a mix of visceral thrills. The filming required that the cast immerse themselves in frenzied scenes doused in blood and chaos, and it’s safe to say there were moments where every actor embraced the experience, with a sense of disbelief backing their performances.
With every passing day, we became a tightly knit group, and camaraderie flourished. There are memories I’ll treasure—the unexpected reactions of cast members upon seeing their bloody alter egos in the mirror, the laughter that erupted at late-night scenes, and the resilience everyone showed amidst the absurdity and chaos of shooting.
A Proud Moment for Columbia
Ultimately, the full experience felt rewarding. It’s now 15 months later, and seeing the culmination of our efforts is truly something special. The film embodies all that is local artistry, crafted in someone’s backyard yet resonating with originality and authenticity.
Should this film gain the attention it deserves, it could pave the way for more local projects that tread off the beaten path. Whether you love horror, appreciate indie films, or want to support local artists, mark your calendars and prepare to enjoy a memorable cinematic experience at the premiere of “Pater Noster and the Mission of Light.” You won’t want to miss it!
