Exciting Expansion Underway for Lake Murray Water Treatment Plant in Lexington, S.C.

Exciting Water Plant Expansion in Lexington, S.C.

Lexington, S.C. seems to be going through some transformative changes, especially when it comes to ensuring that residents have access to clean and tasty drinking water. One of the biggest advancements on the horizon is the expansion of the Lake Murray water treatment plant, a project that has been in the works for a whopping eight years. If you’re a local, you might be pleased to learn that this project is set to bring not only increased capacity but also improvements in taste and odor, concerns that have been on many residents’ minds.

A Long-Awaited Update

Earlier this month, city officials gathered in a special West Columbia council meeting to receive a progress report on this significant project. Andy Zaengle, who serves as the director of engineering and water plants, delivered positive news: the initiative is ahead of schedule! Isn’t it great to hear that things are moving fast?

The master plan for the expansion kicked off back in 2016, aimed primarily at increasing the facility’s water capacity. As the project evolved, it transitioned to include innovative technology designed to enhance the water’s taste and odor. In April of this year, the construction officially began, targeting the capacity aspect of the expansion. So far, approximately 30% of the work has been completed, which is quite impressive!

A Big Provider for the Community

The Lake Murray water plant holds the title of being the largest drinking water supplier in Lexington County. With a budget of around $86 million, this project isn’t just about numbers; it’s about providing quality water that the residents can trust. Zaengle expressed the importance of ensuring that “our customers expect to be able to turn the faucet on and have water there,” reflecting the community’s desire for reliability without the stress of usage restrictions.

Introducing Advanced Technology

One of the most significant advancements in the project will be the implementation of ozone technology, a cutting-edge way to tackle those pesky taste and odor issues. This particular component alone is expected to cost $40 million. What does this technology do, you might ask? In simple terms, it will help remove organic compounds from the water, ensuring that it tastes better and smells fresher.

Interestingly, the Lake Murray plant will become a pioneer in this respect; it’ll be the only facility in the Midlands to incorporate ozone technology, positioning it as one of just five plants statewide with this capability. Zaengle was candid about the feedback from residents: “Addressing taste and odor really comes from our customers.” It’s refreshing to see that community input is shaping such an essential project!

More Capacity for the Future

Currently, the plant can handle 27 million gallons of water every day; however, with the expansion, that number will rise to an impressive 36 million gallons. And for those who are concerned about the financial impacts, Zaengle pointed out that funding for the expansion will come from various sources, including bond funds, and it won’t directly affect residents’ water bills. That’s a relief, right?

What Will the Plant Look Like?

As for how the plant will look once the renovations are complete, you might be surprised to learn that not much will change on the surface. Most of the expansion work will take place underground, meaning it may not look significantly different to the casual observer. But Zaengle assures that if you take a walk through the plant, there will be noticeable improvements.

A Timeline to Remember

So when can we expect all of this to be completed? The project is slated for completion by 2027. Until then, residents can look forward to cleaner, better-tasting water coming from their taps!

In summary, this major investment in the Lake Murray water plant represents not just an expansion in capacity but also a commitment to quality that prioritizes the needs of the community. Lexington is on its way to providing even better water for everyone!
