LEXINGTON – If you’re looking for a reason to celebrate, downtown Lexington rolled out the red carpet this past Friday, December 6, as thousands flocked to the Icehouse Amphitheater to take part in the town’s annual Christmas Carolighting event. Even on a chilly night with temperatures dipping into the 30s, the spirit of the season kept the community warm and bustling!
Families, friends, and little ones bundled up and headed to the Icehouse, ready for a night of fun and festivities. The charming venue was alive with excitement as the crowd snapped photos with Santa, munched on delicious slices of pizza from food trucks, and sipped on steaming cups of hot chocolate while fog rolled off their cups. The highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the grand moment when the towering Christmas tree lit up the night, followed by a showing of the beloved holiday film, “The Muppet Christmas Carol.”
As the flickering lights performed their magic, the migration began! Groups of friends and families were ready to keep the festive spirit alive and made their way up the hill to Main Street. Some chose to stop for zesty nachos and tequila at Barrio Tacos, while others opted for a blend of flavors at the Asian-Latin fusion restaurant TakoSushi, which opened not too long ago. Locals squeezed into the bar at O’Hara’s Public House, while crowds packed Keg Cowboy, the craft beer haven where Christmas lights twinkled above and a jukebox filled the air with holiday tunes.
This festive gathering wasn’t just a fun night out; it represents something bigger happening in downtown Lexington. Locals know that this once sleepy area has transformed into a vibrant hotspot. Brian Nelson, the owner of Keg Cowboy, shared his vision for this transformation that he’s anticipated for a decade. Feeling nostalgic about his time in Charleston, he remarked, “I felt like this would come… We are really close!”
The growing vibrancy of downtown Lexington is no surprise to Julie Noufal, a resident who attended the carolighting with her daughter, Amira. After living in the town for over a decade, Julie has seen a boom in the local scene and loves how events at the amphitheater draw people to explore dining options and shops nearby. “When something is going on here, it has Main Street really popping with all the restaurants and stuff, too,” she said with a smile.
Not only have events increased foot traffic to local restaurants and bars, but they also support local vendors. At the market connected to the amphitheater during the Christmas event, visitors mingled through tables showcasing everything from artwork to homemade baked goods. Samad Green, representing his wife’s business, Christine’s Petite Sweets, noted, “I’ve seen enough change that I know the draw is coming back to the historic downtown.”
Lexington Mayor Hazel Livingston, who embodies the drive behind this downtown renaissance, couldn’t help but express her pride at the event’s turnout. The Icehouse Amphitheater, which has ushered in over 162,700 visitors in the past year, is central to this transformation. “It’s about creating a thriving downtown where people can explore diverse dining options,” she stated, revealing that more exciting developments, like the new Voodoo Brewing Company and a modern steakhouse, are on their way!
As the night drew on, patrons at O’Hara’s Public House celebrated their beloved Disco Night, a monthly event that has captured the hearts of many. Owner Matt O’Hara remarked on the convenience and buzz of living in such a lively downtown, stating, “The events at the amphitheater drive a spike in our business.”
“It’s warming to my heart to see people out interacting with each other,” Mayor Livingston emphasized. According to Town Council member Gavin Smith, the vibrancy in downtown Lexington is a significant change from his childhood, where options were limited. “Now you come down Main Street, and we have thousands of people here on a Friday night!”
With the lights shining bright from the Icehouse Amphitheater and the air filled with laughter and joy, Lexington is not just celebrating the holiday season; it’s igniting a community transformation that’s bringing neighbors closer and redefining the local scene. This holiday gathering was just a glimpse of the warm and inviting future ahead!
