Columbia Enhances Safety and Aesthetics at Downtown Intersection Near Universities
Hey there, Columbia! Exciting news is in the air for those traveling through the busy downtown area. Construction at a crucial intersection near Allen University and Benedict College is nearing completion, with an anticipated wrap-up date set for early January. This project is all about making our streets safer and more beautiful for everyone, and it’s almost time to enjoy the fruits of those labors!
City officials have been working hard to bring some much-needed upgrades to the Taylor Street intersection. The goal? Improved pedestrian safety and a breath of fresh air to the curb appeal of the area. According to Columbia Assistant City Manager Clint Shealy, this project aims to “beautify the entryway into both Benedict and Allen University, creating a lovely corridor along Harden Street.”
So, what kind of changes can you expect? Well, among the many impressive upgrades, there are freshly paved sidewalks, new crosswalks, and shortened pedestrian crossings. These enhancements will make it easier and safer for folks to navigate the busy streets. The city is also introducing “bump outs”—a clever design technique that reduces the distance pedestrians need to cross, which is super helpful when traffic gets busy.
“We’re doing signalization improvements and putting up new mast arms,” Shealy added, showcasing the city’s efforts to enhance safety further.
This project isn’t flying solo; it’s a team effort that includes the South Carolina Department of Transportation, the City of Columbia, Allen University, and Benedict College. What’s even better? The improvements are funded through federal Local Public Agency dollars, plus some generous support from the Richland County Transportation Committee (CTC). That’s right—no taxpayer dollars from the city are being used here! In total, about $1.6 million worth of improvements was made possible through gas tax and federal funding.
As we approach the end of the year, construction crews will be busy putting on the finishing touches, which includes restriping and additional paving. The city is hopeful that all work will be complete shortly after the holiday season, just in time for everyone to truly appreciate the transformed intersection.
But that’s not all! As part of the same initiative, improvements were also made to other intersections in the area, such as the Taylor and Pine Street intersection and the Blanding and Harden Street intersection. More upgrades mean better safety for everyone who travels through downtown Columbia.
As we inch closer to January, Columbia residents can look forward to a more pedestrian-friendly downtown that benefits students and visitors alike. The changes are setting the stage for a safer, more beautiful community that encourages walking and celebrates our vibrant local culture.
So, let’s keep our eyes peeled for the final touches in the coming weeks, and soon we can all enjoy a nicer, safer corner of downtown Columbia. Cheers to progress!
