Exciting Upgrades to Enhance Safety and Aesthetics at Downtown Columbia’s Taylor Street Intersection

Exciting Changes Coming to Downtown Columbia!

Downtown Columbia, South Carolina, is buzzing with anticipation as the construction at the Taylor Street intersection is nearing its grand reveal, likely by early January! This intersection is a central hub where Allen University and Benedict College meet, and the forthcoming upgrades are all about enhancing the community’s safety and charm.

What’s New at the Intersection?

City officials have been hard at work on this project for several months, and it’s all aimed at making the area not just safer for pedestrians but also more visually appealing. As Columbia’s Assistant City Manager Clint Shealy expressed, “It’s really going to beautify the entryway into both Benedict and Allen University and that whole corridor along Harden Street.” Can you imagine the lively atmosphere that will flourish once these upgrades are complete?

So, what can residents and students expect? The upgrades at the intersection include:

  • Freshly paved sidewalks
  • New crosswalks
  • Shortened pedestrian crossings

Shealy further detailed the concept of bump outs, which are part of this project. These bumps will allow pedestrian crossings to be shorter, making it easier and safer for folks to navigate across the busy street. Safety is a priority here!

How Are These Improvements Funded?

One of the standout features of this project is its funding—no city taxpayer dollars were used! The project was supported by federal Local Public Agency dollars alongside contributions from the Richland County Transportation Committee (CTC). Shealy highlighted that “about $1.6 million worth of improvements, no city tax dollars directly, all funded through gas tax and through federal dollars.” It’s great to see such valuable upgrades are being handled in a fiscally responsible way!

What’s Next on the Agenda?

As we inch closer to completion, construction crews are gearing up to focus on some final touches, including restriping and additional paving in the next few weeks. These improvements are not only limited to the Taylor Street intersection but also extend to enhancements at the Taylor and Pine Street intersection and the Blanding and Harden Street intersection. Talk about a transformation for the whole area!

The city looks forward to wrapping up all of this work just after the holiday season, which means the new year will greet us with a splendid, safer downtown. Imagine walking through a beautifully renovated corridor adorned with fresh landscaping, safe pathways, and vibrant community art. It’s what Columbia truly deserves!

In Conclusion

With these exciting developments on the horizon, community members and college students alike should stay tuned as the city of Columbia continues to evolve and grow. Not only does it show commitment to safety and accessibility, but it also enhances the beauty and vibrancy that makes downtown Columbia a fantastic place to study, work, and live. Buckle up for a fresh and enjoyable space!
