Dollar General store with closing sale sign

News Summary

The Dollar General store located at 1720 Taylor Street in Columbia will close on April 25, 2025, as part of a nationwide shutdown of nearly 100 stores. Starting March 19, 2025, a closing sale will begin, allowing shoppers to take advantage of last-minute deals. This closure reflects a troubling trend for the retail chain amid declining profits and operations challenges, particularly in urban areas. The move emphasizes a transition in retail landscapes, leaving loyal customers with a sense of loss while opening doors for future opportunities.

Columbia Bid Farewell to Local Dollar General as Store Closes

In a rather surprising move, it has been announced that Dollar General will close almost 100 stores nationwide in the first quarter of 2025, and unfortunately, one of those stores is the Taylor Street location right here in Columbia. Situated at 1720 Taylor St., this beloved neighborhood store is set to close its doors for good on April 25, 2025.

Closing Sale Underway!

For shoppers, it’s bittersweet news. Starting March 19, 2025, the Taylor Street Dollar General started holding a closing sale. If you’re a regular or even an occasional shopper at this local gem, it might be a good idea to drop by and snag some last-minute deals while you can!

A National Trend

This closure is part of a larger trend, as Dollar General has announced the shuttering of a total of 96 stores across the country. While that sounds like quite a number, it’s less than 1% of the company’s vast store network, which includes over 20,000 stores located across 48 states. Interestingly, about 30 of these locations are right here in the Columbia area.

Why the Closures?

Dollar General’s CEO explained that the stores selected for closure have been increasingly challenging to operate, particularly those based in urban areas. The recent financial report highlighted some troubling trends as well, with a staggering 49.2% decrease in operating profits for the fourth quarter, totaling $294.2 million. This drop isn’t an isolated incident; the company also reported a 29.9% decline for the fiscal year, with profits falling to $1.7 billion.

Future Plans Amidst Cuts

Interestingly, in the same breath as announcing these closures, Dollar General also disclosed plans to enhance operations through feedback from their “Back to Basics” initiative that began in fiscal 2024. This includes a strategic approach to optimize resource allocation and to rethink store operations moving forward.

Popshelf Stores Affected Too

In addition to the Dollar General closures, the chain is also preparing to shut down 45 Popshelf stores. This new concept focuses on offering a budget-friendly and enjoyable shopping experience, especially in home decor and seasonal goods. However, it still remains unclear if the single Popshelf store on Harbison Boulevard will be among those affected by the closures.

Changes at Headquarters

The belt-tightening doesn’t stop there. There have been significant layoffs at Dollar General’s Goodlettsville headquarters, affecting not just entry-level positions but some vice presidents and various engineers and analysts as well.

Looking Ahead

Despite the troubling financial landscape, Dollar General reported a modest 4.5% increase in net sales for the fourth quarter, reaching a hefty total of $10.3 billion. Looking to the future, the Popshelf brand has ambitious plans to open around 1,000 new stores by the end of fiscal 2025. But after the recent closures, about 175 locations will remain standing, demonstrating a commitment to growth even amidst the challenges.

A Community Loss

As residents of Columbia anticipate the closing of the Taylor Street Dollar General, it’s a reminder of how retail landscapes constantly change. While this closure might be tough for loyal shoppers, it also opens the door for future plans and opportunities. So, if you haven’t had a chance to visit recently, now’s the time to swing by before it’s too late!
