Hey there, Columbia! If you’re looking for some fresh tunes to add to your playlist, you’re in luck because we’ve got the scoop on a new indie rock sensation that’s making waves in the local music scene! Drumroll, please! Meet Dead Spring, a talented group of musicians who have just dropped their debut album, “Anywhere But Down”.
Last September, somewhat under the radar, Dead Spring released their seven-track project that is quickly being recognized as one of the best local indie rock albums of the year. The band consists of Alec Edelson on vocals and guitar, Sammuel Traquina on guitar, Morgan Johnson on bass, and Will Ashley on drums. With such a stellar lineup, it’s no wonder this album has caught the ears of many.
The album kicks off with a hauntingly beautiful piece that features just a voice and an electric guitar. Edelson’s soulful question, “What’s left to explore?/Why beg for more,” sets a reflective tone that draws you in. As you dive deeper into the album, you’ll find yourself rocking out to tracks like “Tired Arms,” a lively punk-pop anthem that showcases some of the coolest dual-guitar lines reminiscent of the legendary Iron Maiden!
As you glide through the album, you’ll encounter songs like “Fast Asleep,” which transitions beautifully from grinding rhythms to a delightful, sunburst-like verse that’s sure to leave you humming long after you hear it. And just when you think you’ve heard it all, the album wraps up with two powerful hard-rock epics—“Elasmotherium” and “Cliffside.” It’s safe to say, Dead Spring has solidified their presence in the local music scene.
Now, let’s take a moment to talk about the band’s leader, Alec Edelson. You might find it interesting that he also fronts another band called Axattack, a hardcore thrash metal group that sounds like a wild early Metallica, if they were possessed! But that’s exactly what makes Dead Spring so special—Edelson’s ability to create melodies that are both emotional and relatable while still indulging his thrash metal roots. “I wanted to play something more melodic,” he told us, explaining how his love for the Foo Fighters inspired him to write songs that tell a story.
All the magic of “Anywhere But Down” was recorded right at Edelson’s house, allowing the band to really dive into each track without the pressure of studio rates ticking down. “I think the real reason the album sounds as good as it does is that we took all the time we could fine-tuning and tweaking everything,” he said. Talk about dedication!
As they bask in the success of their debut album, Edelson and the gang are focused on building a local fanbase and are eager to engage with their community. “My focus is trying to get some semblance of a local crowd,” he mentioned. There’s already talk of new EPs on the horizon, but Edelson wants to make sure there are enthusiastic listeners ready for more!
So, if you’re in Columbia and looking to check out some new local music, keep your eyes peeled for Dead Spring’s upcoming shows. After all, it’s not every day you get to witness the rise of a band that’s already making such a strong impact with their debut album!
Until next time, keep those tunes spinning and support your local artists! 🎶
