H.E. Corley Elementary School Incident Leads to Arrest
Irmo, S.C. — A significant incident unfolded at H.E. Corley Elementary School on Friday morning when a man was arrested following a suspicious vehicle report. The situation began around 9:15 a.m., when the school resource officer (SRO) noticed a vehicle parked near a play area, raising alarms about potential inappropriate activity on school grounds.
Details of the Arrest
Upon approaching the vehicle, the SRO requested that the driver and passengers exit the vehicle. Suspicion increased as the officer detected the odor of marijuana emanating from within the vehicle. Recognizing the possible need for assistance, the SRO called for backup units to the scene and asked the occupants to leave the vehicle.
At this point, two of the occupants complied and exited the vehicle but fled on foot. In contrast, the other two individuals remained and were taken into custody. As a precaution and to ensure the safety of the students, the school’s security team initiated a lockdown of the campus.
Responses and Additional Law Enforcement Involvement
Shortly after the incident, local law enforcement, including Irmo police, spotted the two individuals who had fled. Authorities confirmed that these suspects were at a safe distance from the school. By 11:20 a.m., the lockdown was lifted, allowing normal activities to resume.
Charges and Suspects
One of the detained individuals, a 22-year-old named Javon Quattlebaum, faces several charges: possession of marijuana, possession with intent to distribute cocaine, providing false information to law enforcement, disturbing the school, and trespassing after refusal to leave. The second individual, a juvenile, was released to their parents without any charges being filed at this time.
Despite an extensive search by deputies and local police for the two men who ran from the scene, they were not apprehended. Law enforcement has stated that they do not consider the fugitives a threat to the community. However, they urge anyone with information regarding the incident or the suspects to reach out anonymously to Crimestoppers at 888-CRIME-SC (888-274-6372).
Community Impact
This incident has raised concerns among parents and staff at H.E. Corley Elementary School, who prioritize the safety of their students. School administrators have reinforced their commitment to maintaining a secure environment for everyone at the school and are working closely with law enforcement to address any lingering safety concerns.
The school district is expected to provide updates to the community as more information arises regarding both the apprehended individual and the ongoing search for the other two suspects.
