Columbia Hosts Youth Talk-A-Thon to Raise Awareness About Justice System

COLAUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) – The streets of Columbia will be filled with excited young voices this Saturday as the City’s Office of Violent Crime Prevention gears up for a special event called the Youth Talk-A-Thon. This event, scheduled for October 19, is a part of the celebration for Youth Justice Action Month, an annual recognition aimed at highlighting the crucial issues surrounding youth and the justice system.

What to Expect at the Event

The Youth Talk-A-Thon promises to be an engaging and informative day for the community. Kicking off at 10 a.m. and running until 1 p.m., the event is completely free of charge, making it accessible for everyone who wishes to learn more about this important topic.

Participants can look forward to various activities throughout the day. There will be breakout sessions designed to facilitate discussion among youth, parents, and community leaders about the impact of the justice system on children. These breakout sessions aim to create a safe space where young people can share their thoughts and experiences related to justice and fairness.

In addition to the breakout sessions, the event will feature a roundtable discussion, providing an opportunity for individuals to engage in meaningful conversations about youth justice issues. Local experts and advocates will be on hand to share insights and answer any questions attendees might have about navigating the justice system and its implications for young people.

Community Resource Fair

One of the most exciting features of the Youth Talk-A-Thon is the community resource fair, where various local organizations will set up booths to provide valuable resources and information. These organizations will offer guidance on mental health resources, educational programs, and employment opportunities specifically geared towards youth. It’s a fantastic opportunity for young individuals and their families to connect with services that can support their overall well-being.

Why This Event Matters

The Youth Talk-A-Thon is more than just a gathering; it serves as an essential reminder of the challenges young people face within the justice system. Studies show that many children and teens have been negatively affected by encounters with law enforcement or the courts. With this event, Columbia aims to raise awareness and promote understanding of these issues while empowering young people to advocate for their rights.

“Our goal is to create a dialogue about how our justice system works and how it impacts our youth,” said a spokesperson from the Office of Violent Crime Prevention. “We believe that by educating our community, we can help foster a safer and more supportive environment for our young people.”
