Columbia, S.C. – It was a tragic Sunday morning for the Columbia community as news broke of a serious car accident that left one woman dead. The Sumter County Coroner confirmed that the incident occurred around 2 a.m. on a quiet street not too far from U.S. Hwy. 378, known locally as Broad Street, and State Hwy. 261 South, better recognized as S. Kings Highway.
According to Corporal Nick Pye with the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the crash involved two vehicles: a 2001 Ford sedan and a 2015 Dodge pickup truck. Both vehicles were traveling east on Broad Street when they collided under circumstances that are still under investigation.
First responders rushed to the scene, where the driver of the sedan was promptly taken to the hospital for treatment. Unfortunately, the driver of the Dodge pickup truck, identified as 48-year-old Monica Wright, was pronounced dead at the scene, leaving family, friends, and the community in shock.
As word of the accident spread, many members of the Columbia community began to express their condolences and share their memories of Monica. Friends described her as a kind and caring person who always had a smile on her face, ready to lift others up. “She was the type of person who would go out of her way to help you,” said one longtime friend. “It’s hard to believe she’s gone.”
Such sudden deaths remind us how fragile life can be, and it usually brings everyone closer together, as they rally around the grieving family. Community members have already begun discussing ways to honor Monica’s memory, whether through donations to local charities or memorial gatherings in her honor.
Coroner Robbie Baker indicated that an autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. This will help clarify the exact cause of death and provide further information about the tragic circumstances.
Meanwhile, the Highway Patrol is diligently continuing their investigation into the crash. They have not yet released additional details regarding the circumstances leading up to the collision. As is common in such cases, officials urge anyone who witnessed the incident or who has information to step forward and share what they know. Witnesses can often provide key insights that help create a clearer picture of what happened.
This heartbreaking accident serves as a grim reminder of the importance of road safety. With many folks hitting the roads late at night, it’s crucial to stay alert and drive responsibly. Local authorities hope that sharing news about this incident will encourage drivers to be extra cautious, especially during the late hours when fatigue can set in.
As the investigation continues, the focus shifts towards healing for all those affected by this tragedy. Community members are encouraged to support each other and remain vigilant about safety on the roads.
In these tough times, let’s all take a moment to appreciate our loved ones, prioritize safety, and remember that every life is precious. Monica’s legacy will surely live on through the memories and smiles she created among those who knew her.
