Winter Wonderland Approaches Columbia, SC!

Attention, Columbia! A cold weather system is on the way, and it’s about to turn our fair city into a snowy spectacle. The forecast indicates that temperatures will plummet below freezing, with lows dipping as low as 21°F. So, grab your warmest coat and prepare for some winter fun!

The Week’s Forecast

Starting this Wednesday, we can expect a widespread rain event to roll through, with high temperatures only reaching around 45°F. Those will be cool, cloudy days as northeast winds of 6 to 8 mph accompany this wet weather. With an 80% chance of precipitation, umbrellas should be at the ready!

As the night falls, that rain will taper off, leaving us with mostly cloudy skies and dipping to a low near 30°F. Then on Thursday, a bit of sunlight may peek through, bringing partly sunny skies but still chilly temperatures with a high of 44°F. Don’t forget to bundle up because nighttime temperatures are expected to plunge to 21°F.

Friday promises to be a bit brighter with a sunny outlook and warmer temperatures hitting a high of 48°F. However, it won’t be long before the cold returns at night, bringing a low of 25°F.

A Winter Wonderland Warning!

Now, let’s talk about the exciting part: snow! There is talk of a combination of snow and ice for Columbia, especially on Tuesday night. We could see up to 2 inches of snow as we enter the winter storm warning period from 4 p.m. Tuesday until 9 a.m. Wednesday.

Expect snow to start falling between 3-7 p.m. on Tuesday, with heavier snowfall predicted from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Wednesday. And keep in mind that localized snowfall amounts might surprise us, as conditions can shift quickly.

Be Cautious out There!

If you have any travel plans during this time, be sure to prepare for some slippery conditions. Possible ice accumulations may lead to hazardous roads, especially on untreated surfaces. Now is the time to exercise caution on your evening and morning commutes.

Remember to take extra steps to safeguard your home: cover your pipes, bring your furry friends inside, and perhaps check on any elderly neighbors to ensure they are cozy and warm.

What’s Coming Next?

After a brief thaw on Thursday with highs in the 40s, it seems we might not be out of the woods just yet. Overnight lows could drop back to 22°F, hinting that the chilly weather is lingering. The following week might bring another winter storm situation that is being closely monitored for potential wintry weather.

But wait, there’s more! As we head into the weekend, we can expect a warming trend with temperatures reaching the mid-50s. It’s not the end of the winter chills, though, as rain is anticipated late Friday into Saturday, brought by a different low-pressure system that may deliver heavy rain mainly in western and southern parts of South Carolina.

So, Columbia, get ready for some winter weather magic! Whether you love the snowflakes or prefer staying cozy indoors, it seems this week is going to be eventful.
