Exciting news is bubbling up for residents of Columbia, South Carolina! If you’re living along North Trenholm Road, get ready for improved water pressure, better quality, and increased reliability thanks to a major infrastructure project approved by the city. With nearly $19 million earmarked for upgrades, this initiative promises to revamp outdated water mains that have been more trouble than they’re worth!
In a recent chat, Clint Shealy, Columbia’s Assistant City Manager, highlighted just what this means for you, the customer. “Increased flow, pressure, and better water quality is gonna be really good for you,” he shared enthusiastically. And he’s absolutely right! The upcoming upgrades will not only modernize the water systems on North Trenholm Road but will also create stronger, more reliable pipelines that will enhance service for everyone.
This is not just about making your tap better! The project comes with a whole suite of benefits. Bigger and sturdier mains and pipes will not only improve your home’s water service but will also help carry fresh water from the Lake Murray Water Treatment Plant more efficiently. Why is this crucial? Well, it means that areas across the city, including downtown and the southeastern service area, will receive a **secondary water supply**—and let’s not forget Fort Jackson, which relies heavily on consistent water supply. Shealy defines the interconnected nature of this upgrade as vital for the city and its essential services.
The project is divided into two distinct phases, and both phases are set to run simultaneously to ensure swift results. The north phase will cover the stretch from Decker Boulevard to Rockbridge Road, while the south phase will reach from Rockbridge Road to Forest Drive. With two contractors on board and working at the same time, you can bet that Columbia Water is committed to getting this done efficiently!
This timing couldn’t be better—it coincides with the plans made by the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) to repave North Trenholm Road. As Shealy wisely pointed out, it would be a disaster to lay fresh asphalt only to rip it up shortly after due to a water line break. “The last thing we want to do is have old infrastructure and fresh pavement on top of it,” he explained. Imagine stepping outside to see men with shovels tearing up that beautiful, smooth surface just because of outdated pipes!
Excitement is building as construction is expected to kick off shortly after the New Year, with work anticipated to wrap up by early 2026. It’s a substantial timeline, but with the magnitude of this project, we can see why it needs the time and care to lay down something that’s going to last.
So, Columbia residents, prepare yourselves for some thrilling changes! Water quality, pressure, and reliability are all on the way to being better than ever. This infrastructure upgrade is bound to transform your daily life, making sure you can enjoy fresh, clean water whenever you turn on that tap!
