Columbia, South Carolina is set for a major upgrade of its iconic Five Points neighborhood, an area renowned for its bustling nightlife and chic retail district. The city has successfully secured a $10 million state fund allocation for the construction of a parking garage. This welcome development is part of the state’s recent budget, signed into law this week by Gov. Henry McMaster.
The substantial funding is earmarked for the creation of a new parking garage, expected to provide between 400 and 500 spaces. This significant upgrade, sponsored by Sen. Dick Harpootlian, is intended to pave the way not only for better parking facilities but also for other potential infrastructural improvements, including a 150-room boutique hotel and office spaces.
These plans were detailed in a March letter sent from Columbia Mayor Daniel Rickenmann to Sen. Dick Harpootlian. Besides the garage and hotel, it is expected that the project will bring into fruition approximately 55,000 square feet of office space. This space will, among other things, house the new headquarters of the South Carolina Bar Association.
The Five Points project is merely the latest in a series of transformations that Columbia has been undertaking. As part of their commitment to revitalize this iconic district, city authorities began a different construction project in April to overhaul Harden Street, which is a critical artery in Five Points. The Harden Street project targets to aid walkability and address speed regulation, thus making the area more pedestrian-friendly and safer.
This parking garage is expected to further increase the attractiveness of Five Points, encouraging even more visitors to enjoy the area’s retail and nightlife offerings. The proposed boutique hotel and expanded office spaces, including the new location for the South Carolina Bar Association, will foster additional business and tourism growth. These developments coincide with Columbia’s ongoing efforts to enhance safety and accessibility in the Five Points area, as demonstrated by their newly initiated project on Harden Street.
Whilst the allocation of the $10 million state fund represents an exciting and significant step forward for Columbia, the construction of the parking garage, hotel and office spaces is yet to commence. The realization of these upgrades will take time. However, with the funding now secured, the project has moved a big step closer to actualization, and Columbia’s iconic Five Points neighborhood appears to be on course for a bright and improved future.
