Columbia, S.C. – The first-ever no-exception early voting period in South Carolina has officially wrapped up, and the numbers are in! The SC State Election Commission proudly reports that more than 1.5 million ballots were cast during the 2024 General Election’s early voting period, marking a historic high for pre-election day participation in the state. Wow, what a turnout!
Who could have imagined just a few years ago that we’d see such a remarkable turnout? In 2020, the South Carolina Legislature took a big leap by allowing residents to vote absentee and in person without needing an excuse for early voting. Prior to that, voters were required to have a valid reason to cast ballots ahead of Election Day, which often led to confusion. Thankfully, the COVID-19 pandemic prompted lawmakers to temporarily suspend those rules, paving the way for an exciting change in how we vote.
Fast forward to May 2022, when legislators passed a bill that established a two-week early voting period. Now, South Carolina joins the ranks of the majority of states that offer early voting, with only Mississippi, Alabama, and New Hampshire holding out. That’s progress we can all celebrate!
Howie Knapp, the Executive Director of the SEC, expressed just how thrilled they are with this record-breaking turnout: “We are thrilled to see this record-breaking turnout during the early voting period as we head into a highly anticipated Election Day.” If you haven’t cast your ballot yet, he encourages you to get out there and exercise your right to vote!
As we approach Election Day, make sure you have your voting game plan set. Polling places will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on November 5, and officials strongly advise checking your sample ballot and polling location at scVOTES.gov before heading out. The last thing you want is to show up and realize you’re at the wrong place!
Don’t forget, a Photo ID is required when you check in to vote. It’s a crucial step that ensures your voice is heard!
Do you have an absentee ballot and haven’t returned it yet? Time to hustle! The return deadline for absentee ballots is 7:00 p.m. on Election Day, November 5. Officials suggest returning your ballot in person to guarantee it arrives on time. Remember, bringing a Photo ID is necessary when you’re submitting your absentee ballot in person.
If you have questions or need assistance regarding absentee ballots, don’t worry! There’s information on scVOTES.gov that outlines how an Immediate Family Member or an Authorized Representative can help you return your ballot. Additionally, military and overseas voters have specific exceptions, so it’s worth checking that out if applicable.
As the election approaches, there’s no better time to feel prepared and informed. Make sure to connect with local resources to ensure you have all the info you need for a smooth voting experience. Being an informed voter not only makes you feel good, but it contributes to our democracy!
So as South Carolina gears up for what promises to be a thrilling Election Day, remember: your voice matters and every vote counts!
