Hello, Columbia! It looks like we have a situation on our hands with Hurricane Milton brewing in the Gulf of Mexico. The latest updates from the National Hurricane Center indicate that this storm is gaining strength, and it’s expected to make its way toward Florida later this week. However, there’s good news for those of us in the Columbia area—we’re likely to escape the worst of it.

The Current Situation

According to meteorologist Brad Carlberg, who shared some insight with us, it seems that Columbia is in a pretty favorable position with the expected path of Milton. He pointed out that while the storm is forecast to escalate into a major hurricane, it’s not anticipated to have a major impact on our area. That news should come as a relief, particularly since many of us are still recovering from the damage left behind by Hurricane Helene.

Milton is currently moving through the Gulf and is projected to make landfall in Florida later this week. Fortunately, the storm’s trajectory appears to be leaning east out toward the Atlantic Ocean rather than veering north, which is what we want to hear!

What to Expect in Columbia

As for us here in Columbia, we might experience some wind gusts, but they should only reach up to about 20 mph. This will likely happen on Thursday afternoon and continue into the evening. However, there’s a silver lining—No rain is expected in our area. The heavy rains and possible tornado activity predicted in some areas aren’t likely to touch Columbia.

In fact, Carlberg mentioned that there’s a medium-to-high confidence level—somewhere between 60 to 80%—that Hurricane Milton will steer clear of the Midlands. While we don’t want to become complacent, it’s nice to know we’re not in the storm’s direct path.

Impact on the South Carolina Coast

Now, just because Columbia may get away unscathed doesn’t mean Milton is harmless. The coastal regions closer to Charleston might face more severe risks, especially regarding coastal flooding. The National Weather Service warns that flooding could peak on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, and there are additional concerns about wind gusts, rain, and high surf.

A Calmer Week Ahead

On the bright side, our weather here in Columbia is forecasted to be quite pleasant, with clear and sunny skies as we head toward the weekend. Temperatures are expected to stay in the 70s, which sounds absolutely delightful. According to Carlberg, we might even see some cooler overnight temperatures, dipping into the 50s this week—definitely a sign that fall is on its way!

Other Storms on the Horizon?

While Hurricane Milton is the main focus now, it’s worth noting that the Atlantic Ocean is still alive with activity. There are two other hurricanes out there and a tropical wave forming off the African coast. Right now, though, none of these storms are projected to affect South Carolina. The tropical wave has only a 30% chance of developing, and as for Hurricanes Kirk and Leslie, it sounds like they’ll be staying far enough away from us to keep our worries at bay.

Recovering from Previous Storms

Many of us in South Carolina remember all too well the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, which had devastating effects, including over 40 fatalities and widespread damage to homes and infrastructure. Even now, there are still reports of over 52,000 power outages in the state. Navigating recovery isn’t easy, but knowing that Milton is unlikely to add to our challenges is reassuring.

As of now, it looks like we will keep our fingers crossed and hope that the forecasts hold true for Columbia. It’s always a good idea to remain vigilant, but for the time being, we can enjoy what looks like a lovely week ahead!
