Columbia Honors Heroes of 9/11 with Heartfelt Tribute at Mission BBQ

Columbia Remembers: A Heartfelt Tribute at Mission BBQ

On a cool morning in Columbia, the air was filled with a sense of purpose and remembrance as locals gathered at Mission BBQ to honor the heroes of September 11, 2001. With cloudy skies overhead and a slight chance of rain in the forecast, it seemed fitting for the heartfelt event that would unfold. The temperature reached a high of 79°F and pleasant ENE winds blew gently, making for a comfortable setting to reflect on a day that changed the nation forever.

A Community Comes Together

Ten years after the tragic attacks, two friends opened the first Mission BBQ, fueled by a love for authentic barbecue and deep respect for American heroes. As they celebrated their 10-year anniversary this year, the Columbia location hosted a special event to pay tribute to first responders, soldiers, firefighters, and police officers. Attendees were greeted by the warm scent of smoky meats and the friendly chatter that filled the restaurant, setting the stage for a day of gratitude.

The program kicked off with a moving rendition of the National Anthem sung by Kaaren Miller from the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department. As her voice soared, the room was a mixture of pride and reverence, perfectly encapsulating the day’s spirit.

Honoring Our Heroes

Throughout the morning, representatives from various local organizations, including the Irmo Fire Department, Irmo Police, Columbia Police, Richland County Sheriff’s Department, and Lexington County EMS, came out to participate in the event. It was a touching moment when Taps was played by Linda McDonald, serving as a solemn reminder of those who lost their lives in the attacks.

JB Barker, a retired officer from the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, was honored at the event for his 29 years of service. Standing alongside Gina Goetschius, the Mission BBQ Community Ambassador, Barker received heartfelt thanks from both guests and staff, highlighting the close-knit ties within the community.

A Gesture of Thanks

In a touching gesture, any first responders who visited the restaurant on this day received a free sandwich as a thank you for their service. Mission BBQ Area Director, Thayer Sheets, expressed gratitude to the first responders saying, “It is because of these heroes that we gather today, all of you, so that we may never forget and always remember. For this we humbly thank you for all that you do every single day.”

Giving Back to the Community

Mission BBQ is not just about delicious food; it’s about giving back. The restaurant regularly donates to local organizations such as the SC State Firefighters Association, the SC Law Enforcement Association, and the Muller Memorial Collection among many others. During the event, attendees also had the opportunity to browse a table filled with hats for sale, all proceeds going toward the Muller Memorial Foundation, further emphasizing the spirit of community support.

Final Thoughts

As the day came to an end, the sense of community was palpable. The gathering at Mission BBQ brought together friends, family, and local heroes, all united in remembrance and gratitude. Even though the skies were cloudy and a few raindrops threatened, the warmth in the hearts of everyone present shone brightly. This annual event is not only a reminder of the past but also a celebration of community and a way to ensure that the sacrifices made by so many are never forgotten.

For those interested in visiting the Columbia location of Mission BBQ, they are located at 275 Harbison Boulevard. There’s always something special happening at this beloved restaurant, where great food meets a greater purpose.
