Folks, mark your calendars for Tuesday, December 31, because the city is all set to welcome 2025 in spectacular fashion with the annual “Capital City Fireworks” event. What better way to ring in the New Year than with a vibrant display of lights and colors exploding in the sky right at midnight?
If you’re planning to catch the fireworks display, the best spot to witness this breathtaking show will be on the north side of the South Carolina State House. The perfect view awaits you at the intersection of Gervais Street and Main Street. With family and friends by your side, you’ll be swept away by the magic of the night!
This year’s event is designed to be family-friendly, encouraging everyone—no matter your age—to come out and celebrate the New Year in a safe and fun environment. The excitement of waving sparklers, enjoying treats, and sharing in the collective countdown as the clock strikes midnight is something that everyone can look forward to.
As the city prepares for the festivities, a few road closures are necessary to ensure safety and a great experience for all attendees. Starting at 6 p.m. on December 31, South Main Street will be closed between Pendleton and College Streets, and it will stay closed until 1:30 a.m. on January 1, when the celebrations wind down.
Additionally, Pendleton Street and College Street will be shut off to traffic between Assembly Street and Sumter Street beginning at 11 p.m.. This allows folks to stroll freely and enjoy the festivities without the worry of traffic. Those roads will reopen at 1:30 a.m. as well.
Finally, Gervais Street along the north side of the State House will close at the same time for ideal fireworks viewing, giving you a hassle-free spot to spread out your blankets and embrace the exuberance of the night!
Worried about where to park? Fear not! The city of Columbia is offering complimentary parking to make your New Year’s Eve adventure less stressful. Parking will be free in the downtown facilities—specifically, Lincoln, Park, Lady, and Sumter—starting at 5 p.m. on December 31. This offer lasts all the way through January 1, 2025, so you can enjoy the celebrations without worrying about the parking meter!
As a friendly reminder, regular parking operations will resume at 2 a.m. on January 2, 2025, so plan accordingly if you’re using street meter parking or other downtown facilities.
