CMCC in Columbia Marks 20 Years of Community and Connection

Exciting Times in Columbia as CMCC Celebrates 20 Years!

Columbia is buzzing with anticipation today as the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center (CMCC) kicks off its celebration of 20 fantastic years of bringing people together. Yes, you heard it right! It’s been two decades since this gem opened its doors, and there’s a lot to cheer about.

Open House Extravaganza

To mark this special milestone, the CMCC is throwing an open house today from 4 to 6 p.m. All Columbia residents and visitors are invited to join in on the fun. What can you expect? Well, think of delicious refreshments, an interesting walking tour of the center, and even some lovely prizes and gifts. It’s a day full of community spirit!

Steven Benjamin, the former Mayor of Columbia, perfectly summed up the purpose of the CMCC by saying, “So many memorable events have been held here, and that’s what this is supposed to be—a place where people, both locals and newcomers, can gather.” It’s all about connections, after all!

A Century of Events

Since its grand opening back in September 2004, the CMCC has truly been an essential part of Columbia’s fabric. Isn’t it amazing to think that it has welcomed over 3.9 million visitors and hosted more than 8,000 events? From international trade shows to corporate functions and elegant receptions, this place does it all. With 142,500 square feet of versatile space, the CMCC features a stunning 16,700 square foot ballroom, 18,560 square feet of meeting space, and a 23,700 square foot column-free exhibit hall. It’s safe to say that no matter the event, the CMCC has the perfect spot to host it.

Attracting Visitors and Boosting Tourism

Cheryl Swanson, the Vice President and General Manager of the CMCC, shared that many guests come for a convention but end up falling in love with Columbia, returning as leisure travelers to explore the area further. “It’s such a hidden gem sometimes that people want to return and experience it over and over again,” she said. Isn’t that just heartwarming?

Speaking of visitors, it’s exciting to note that tourism in the Columbia area has soared! According to recent updates from the area’s marketing organization, tourist numbers have jumped to 16.4 million visitors in 2023, up from 15.8 million in 2022. What an incredible sign of growth and interest in what our vibrant city has to offer!

A VIP Evening to Remember

Just two days before the public celebration, the convention center hosted a special invite-only VIP reception for clients, public officials, and other stakeholders. A unique touch was added to the evening with a live painter creating a stunning new piece to add to the CMCC’s art collection. There’s nothing quite like some live art to elevate the ambiance!

Looking to the Future

As the CMCC celebrates its past, it’s also keeping an eye on the future. Jana Medlin, Board Chair for the Midlands Authority for Conventions, Sports and Tourism, expressed optimism saying, “The future is bright for the Convention Center. There are a lot of great things on the horizon.” It’s heartening to see such enthusiasm!

Join the Celebration!

If you’re in the mood for a little celebration and community gathering, make sure to swing by the CMCC this evening. After all, it’s not every day a place that has contributed so much to our community reaches a significant milestone. Here’s to 20 years of events, connection, and the shared joy that the CMCC has provided to all of us!

Let’s come together to celebrate and look forward to many more wonderful memories and events in Columbia!
