News Summary

The City of Columbia, in collaboration with the Girl Get Up Society, is hosting the annual Mindful Steps Walk on May 3 to raise mental health awareness, especially for women and girls. The event includes a 3K walk, fun activities, and free therapy sessions. A suicide prevention training session will follow on May 10, further empowering the community to address mental health issues. Participants are encouraged to register by May 5 to enjoy pizza and support mental wellness.

Columbia Takes Bold Steps Towards Mental Health Awareness

In a heartwarming move towards fostering mental health awareness, the City of Columbia Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement, along with the Girl Get Up Society, is gearing up for the annual Mindful Steps Walk. This exciting, free event is set to take place on Saturday, May 3, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the picturesque Keenan House Park located at 801 Wildwood Ave.

A Walk to Remember

The Mindful Steps Walk aims to spread awareness about mental health, with special focus on the challenges faced by women and girls in the Midlands. Everyone is encouraged to get involved by forming teams with family, friends, or co-workers to participate in a 3K walk. It’s a fantastic way to show support for mental health while enjoying a lively atmosphere.

Fun for Everyone

But that’s not all! The day promises more than just a walk. Attendees can look forward to a range of delightful activities including balloon artists, face painters, and even a live DJ spinning tunes to keep the energy high. It’s a great opportunity for people of all ages to come together, enjoy themselves, and improve the community’s understanding of mental health issues.

Support Sessions Available

As part of this year’s initiatives, free 15-minute therapy sessions will be available for attendees with certified mental health professionals. This is a golden opportunity for anyone seeking support or simply wanting to learn more about mental wellness. Mental health is crucial for healing within a community, and this event aims to underscore that importance.

Continuing the Conversation

But wait, there’s more! Another significant event is on the horizon, hosted by the Columbia Catholic Mental Health Ministry. On May 10, a free suicide prevention training session will be held at the Holy Trinity Church Parish Center on 404 Cherry St., Columbia Borough, running from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. This training is open to children aged 12 and up and includes adult counselors, but kids under 18 will need parental permission.

Empowering the Community

With recent tragic losses related to suicide shaking the community, it has never been more critical to equip individuals with supportive skills. The training will focus on educating participants about common mental health conditions, recognizing symptoms, and learning effective suicide prevention methods. All who complete the session will receive a QPR booklet and certification— a valuable credential for anyone wishing to make a difference.

Pizza and Pre-Registration

A delicious perk of the day? Pizza will be provided to keep everyone fueled and focused. However, participants are asked to register by May 5 to ensure adequate preparation. Donations to help cover materials and food costs are also welcomed. For those compelled to get involved or who have questions, reaching out via email or phone is encouraged.

Leading the Charge

The suicide prevention training will be conducted by a professional crisis intervention counselor, ensuring a knowledgeable and supportive environment for all participants. Mental health awareness and emotional wellness will be central themes throughout the session, highlighting the importance of caring for ourselves and each other.

Join In!

These upcoming events present a fantastic chance for the entire Columbia community to come together, build understanding, and promote mental wellness. Whether you’re striding along the Mindful Steps Walk or diving into life-saving training, your involvement can ripple throughout the community, making it a healthier and happier place for everyone.
