Columbia Man Sentenced to Over Seven Years for Gun and Drug Possession
Columbia, S.C. – A 35-year-old man from Columbia was sentenced recently to more than seven years in federal prison for his part in gun and drug-related crimes. Jamel Lamont Lewis, a familiar name in the local justice system, faced justice after pleading guilty to charges that included being a felon in possession of ammunition.

This wasn’t an isolated incident for Lewis. Fast forward to July 2021, and investigators with the Richland County Sheriff’s Department pulled over a vehicle that Lewis was a passenger in. Upon the stop, things escalated quickly. Authorities reported that they had to restrain Lewis when he attempted to reach for a loaded .22 caliber pistol that was cleverly concealed in his waistband. Not only was that alarming, but Lewis was also carrying around approximately 65 grams of methamphetamine, which further complicated his already precarious situation.

It’s important to note that Lewis was already under restrictions that prohibited him from possessing firearms or ammunition due to his history of felony convictions. In fact, he had a troubling past that included:
- In 2007 and 2009, he was convicted of aggravated assault for shooting two different victims.

- He also faced charges in 2018 for failure to stop for a blue light and unlawful possession of a firearm, after leading police on a wild vehicle chase.
The Court’s Decision
After all these events unfolded and plenty of mounting evidence was presented, Lewis was sentenced to a total of 85 months in prison. But that’s not just the end of his legal woes. After serving his time, he will also be under a three-year term of court-ordered supervision.
