Columbia, S.C. Welcomes the Palmetto Broadband Coalition!
Good morning, Columbia! As the fog clears away this early morning and clouds loom overhead, we’ve got some exciting news that’s bound to brighten your day. Did you hear? The South Carolina Telecommunications and Broadband Association has officially transformed into the Palmetto Broadband Coalition (PBC)! Yes, you heard it right! This fresh new name comes with a dedication as deep as the roots of our beloved state tree – the Palmetto.
A Legacy of Connectivity
Now, let’s take a stroll down memory lane. The roots of this organization run deep, dating all the way back to 1934 when it first started under the name of the South Carolina Independent Telephone Association. Over the decades, the organization has had several name changes reflecting its evolution, but the mission has always remained the same: ensuring that everyone in South Carolina stays connected. Isn’t that amazing?
Why the Change?
Will Helmly, the CEO of Home Telecom and Chairman of the newly formed PBC, states it perfectly, saying, “South Carolina is changing and so are we.” This transformation isn’t just about a new name; it reflects a renewed commitment to provide all South Carolinians with reliable, high-speed internet. The PBC aims to actively work with policymakers and community members alike, focusing on expanding broadband infrastructure to foster economic development and empower local communities.
Connecting Communities
The Palmetto Broadband Coalition is not just a name change; it’s a powerhouse of connectivity. The coalition represents companies that serve over 430,000 broadband customers across the state and employ more than 2,800 South Carolinians full-time. Let’s not forget the impressive investment of nearly $1 billion in broadband capital in recent years. Now that’s a serious commitment to ensuring everyone has access to modern communication technologies!
Local Commitment Over Corporate Interests
One of the standout features of the PBC is its dedication to local communities. Unlike large national or multinational companies focused on profits, the PBC members and leaders are your neighbors! They live and work in the communities they serve, striving to provide not only modern technologies but also superior customer service. It’s all about making connections, quite literally!
Meet the Leaders
Helmly isn’t alone in this venture. Alongside him are luminaries of the telecommunication field, including Jay Brown from Farmers Telephone Cooperative, Inc., Ben Spearman from Comporium, and the Executive Director Nola Armstrong. Together, they’ll lead the charge in advocating for policies and investments that amplify broadband access, bridge the digital divide, and promote collaborations with public and private sectors.
Who’s Involved?
The PBC is a diverse collective, counting among its members familiar names like Comporium of Rock Hill, Farmers Telephone Cooperative of Kingstree, and Horry Telephone Cooperative from Conway. They’re joined by numerous other cooperatives and over 100 associate members providing essential services and products. Talk about a united front in advancing broadband access!
