Columbia, S.C. — It’s been a tough time for the Columbia community as the tragic shooting of a local teenager, Julian Keel, continues to weigh heavily on our hearts. In a recent turn of events, Columbia Police have apprehended two individuals in connection to Julian’s untimely death, shedding some light on this distressing incident that shook a neighborhood during what was meant to be a joyous graduation celebration.
On June 2, around 12:30 a.m., chaos erupted at Roll-Out Wangz, Eggrollz and Thangz Bar and Restaurant, a venue located in the 1400 block of Colonial Life Boulevard. As a group of teenagers celebrated their graduations, a fight broke out in the parking lot, and suddenly, gunfire rang out. Witnesses reported hearing more than 50 rounds fired from an array of at least four different firearms.
Julian Keel, a rising senior at Keenan High School and a talented three-sport athlete, was caught in the crossfire. Tragically, he was attempting to leave the party when he was fatally shot, marking a senseless loss of a promising young life.
Police Chief Skip Holbrook shared that the investigation led to the arrests of 20-year-old Tonie Wilson and a 16-year-old juvenile, both facing charges of murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, and additional offenses. Wilson was arrested in Sumter by the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force, while the juvenile was located nearby in Gaston.
Chief Holbrook noted the initial investigation faced challenges, with few tips coming in. However, recent developments, including a crucial tip, helped police make a connection to the suspects. Over the past weeks, officers dedicated over 1,000 hours to interviewing more than 50 witnesses, demonstrating the community’s resolve to uncover the truth behind this tragedy.
Holbrook emphasized the personal nature of this case, acknowledging that the detectives involved are not just officers, but also parents, relatives, and friends. “This stuff is personal and it matters,” he said.
As part of the investigation, authorities have seized four firearms, including a disturbing 300 blackout assault style weapon linked to the deadly shots that claimed Julian’s life. Intriguingly, police believe this weapon was obtained from the dark web, raising serious concerns about gun access in our community.
Chief Holbrook confirmed that Julian Keel was an innocent bystander in the conflict fueled by an ongoing “beef” between Wilson and the juvenile. Sadly, while tensions flared between competing groups at the event, it was a non-participant like Julian who suffered the consequences. This highlights a tragic reality that too many families face in our current climate of violence.
As the investigation unfolds, authorities anticipate more arrests may follow as they continue to gather evidence. This incident marks one of 12 homicides in Columbia this year, all of which have now been solved, a bittersweet confirmation for a community seeking closure.
The loss of Julian remains fresh, and our hearts are with his family and friends as they navigate this terrible chapter. Though the police work tirelessly to ensure justice is served, it’s a stark reminder of the need for community cohesion and vigilance in preventing such tragedies in the future. Together, let’s hope for peace and healing in Columbia.
