In the heart of Columbia, S.C., a heartwarming tradition continues as CMS Roofing spreads joy through its annual new roof giveaway for first responders. This year, they rolled out the red carpet for Senior Columbia-Richland Firefighter Kevin O’Brien, who was honored with a brand-new roof for his humble abode on Saturday, November 2nd. This sweet gesture is all about showing gratitude to those who dedicate their lives to serving the Midlands.
Kevin O’Brien isn’t just any firefighter. He has dedicated decades to the noble profession, spending five of those years right here in the Midlands. His impressive resume includes prestigious accolades like the Medal of Valor and The Phoenix Award, which recognize his remarkable bravery and steadfast dedication. However, amidst all his heroics, O’Brien found himself facing a daunting task—his home needed a roof repair that was sure to cost thousands.
“It was going to be a big strain on us,” O’Brien shared with a hint of anxiety. “I thought, why not apply? We never win anything, but you never know what could happen.” Little did he know, fortune was smiling down on him.
The excitement unfolded when O’Brien missed the initial call about winning. He was busy doing what he does best—serving the community! “We were down doing our battalion-level training,” he recounted, “and one of our chiefs was speaking. I thought it was a spam call.” Thankfully, his fiancé, Annie Eaton, was there to receive the life-changing news. “It was a little bit surreal,” Eaton exclaimed. “I thought we didn’t win, and then all of the sudden, it was ‘We’d like to come in two weeks and give you a free roof.’”
O’Brien, originally hailing from Maryland, made his way to the Midlands in 2015 where he started volunteering with the Columbia-Richland Fire Department while pursuing his studies at the University of South Carolina. Eaton, who moved from Florida, also works in a nonprofit and has been sharing a home with O’Brien for about a year and a half. Unfortunately, they discovered their new home had an old roof that leaked.
But now, with this generous donation, a massive weight has been lifted off their shoulders. “It was almost an immediate burden off our shoulders,” O’Brien admitted, relieved that they wouldn’t have to scrape together funds for a roof replacement for the upcoming year.
CMS Roofing, in partnership with GAF, has built a beautiful tradition of providing new roofs each year to first responders across the state at their three branches. This year, Chris Manuel, a dedicated police officer in Springdale, also received a generous roofing gift from the same initiative.
Mike Curcil, owner of CMS Roofing, emphasized the importance of giving back to those who selflessly support the community. “In (O’Brien’s) situation, it really moved me because the homeowners here give back,” Curcil said. “They moved into the home; they needed to get a new roof, they had some leaks, and they both volunteer. They were in need of a roof, so we were able to provide that.”
Thanks to CMS Roofing, O’Brien and Eaton now have a sturdy roof that boasts a 50-year warranty. Curcil added, “It’s going to be really wind resistant and excellent for them for the future. As they grow their family, they won’t have to worry about leaks or problems, mildew or molds.”
The installation day turned into a joyous celebration as CMS Roofing employees gathered at O’Brien and Eaton’s home. Celebrating the spirit of community, Megan Matthews, an Administrative Assistant with CMS Roofing, reflected, “Everyone coming together just like Kevin does on a daily basis. It’s great we can all do it together.”
With a new roof over their heads, O’Brien and Eaton can continue focusing on their community service without the added worry of home repairs. Such stories remind us of the impact of gratitude and support in the lives of those who serve us all.
