Columbia Honors New Graduates at South Carolina Fire Academy Celebration

Columbia Celebrates New Heroes: Fire Academy Graduation Day

Columbia, South Carolina, was filled with excitement and pride on a sunny Friday as the South Carolina Fire Academy celebrated a milestone event. Fourteen dedicated recruits proudly graduated from the rigorous eight-week firefighter candidate school, having completed a whopping 320 hours of both classroom instruction and hands-on training. Talk about commitment!

Training for Bravery and Competence

The training program, which runs quarterly, covers an impressive array of subjects tailored to prepare recruits for the challenges they will face in the field. Topics span from emergency responder first aid and hazardous materials operations to firefighting techniques for flammable liquids and gases and auto extrication. Recruits also learn essential rescue techniques and obtain their NFPA Firefighter I and II certifications.

To top off the graduation ceremony, Captain Micah Rains from the Greenville City Fire Department delivered a stirring keynote speech that inspired the new graduates to carry the values of service, dedication, and teamwork throughout their careers.

A Proud Moment for Awardees

The ceremony wasn’t just about receiving diplomas; it was also a chance to highlight some shining stars among the recruits. Award winners included:

  • Order of the Maltese: Dakota Forsythe, Cayce Fire Department – This prestigious award, chosen by the recruits themselves, honors the individual who best embodies the eight principles of the Maltese Cross.
  • Chief Robert Frick Award: Ryan Gregory, Aiken Department of Public Safety – Recognized for having the highest academic performance in the Firefighter II program. That’s some serious study time!
  • Pride of the Battalion: Dakota Forsythe, Cayce Fire Department – Selected by instructors, this award acknowledges the recruit who exemplified outstanding teamwork and camaraderie.

All-Encompassing Training for All

The Fire Academy plays a crucial role in training various municipal fire services. Whether they are paid or volunteer departments, airport fire and rescue teams, industrial fire brigades, or emergency service organizations, the academy ensures that they receive top-notch training. This thorough preparation helps to keep South Carolina communities safe and equipped to handle emergencies.

Accredited and Trustworthy

Furthermore, it’s worth noting that the Fire Academy is accredited by both the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress and the National Board on Fire Service Professional Qualifications. That speaks volumes about the quality of education and training that recruits receive! The academy is part of the Division of Fire and Life Safety, which also includes the State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Emergency Response Task Force, all under the official umbrella of the South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing, and Regulation.

Looking Ahead

As these brave individuals step into their new roles as firefighters, they carry with them not just the skills they acquired but also the honor of serving their communities. With their hearts set on making a difference, these graduates are all set to tackle whatever challenges lie ahead. Columbia, and indeed the whole of South Carolina, can rest easy knowing that these recruits are ready to answer the call when duty calls!

So here’s to our newest firefighters—may your careers be fulfilling, adventurous, and above all, safe!
