Columbia Celebrates the Launch of Debutante Season with Dazzling Ball

Columbia Shines Bright at the Season’s First Debutante Ball!

Columbia, November 28, 2024 – The air was filled with excitement and elegance as the city kicked off the debutante season with The Columbia Ball held on Thanksgiving Eve, November 27. The splendid event took place at the University of South Carolina’s Pastides Alumni Center and showcased a beautiful gathering of debutantes, their families, and honored guests.

A Night to Remember

As guests arrived, they were greeted warmly by Mr. Earle Craig Waites, Jr., the president of The Columbia Ball, alongside his charming wife, Mrs. Waites. The festivities began promptly at 7:00 p.m. with a delightful reception where everyone mingled and captured memories.

After a bit of socializing, it was time for the much-anticipated presentation of the debutantes. Each young lady was presented by her proud father, adding a personal touch that made the evening even more special. The air was buzzing with energy as Mr. Waites introduced the debutantes, setting the stage for a night filled with joy, tradition, and lively music provided by the Ross Holmes Band.

Meet the Debutantes

The spotlight shone brightly on some of Columbia’s finest young women making their formal bow to society. Among them was Miss Caroline Everett Little, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Pringle Little, elegantly escorted by Mr. Joseph High Pope, Jr. Another standout was Miss Helen Ellsworth Clarke, who was beautifully presented by her father and escorted by Mr. Samuel Sumpter Clarke.

Other wonderful debutantes included Miss Elizabeth Buchanan Kelchner, Miss Sarah Helen Irene McNair, Miss Mae Woodward Williams, and Miss Mary Stephens McMillan. Each lady looked absolutely radiant in their beautiful gowns, expertly complemented by hand-tied bouquets of roses, hydrangeas, and antique carnations, wrapped in soft pink velvet ribbon.

Generations of Grace

This year, the ball also saw the granddaughters making their formal debuts. Miss Carroll Barrett Campbell and Miss Virginia Beverley Dunlap graced the stage, representing the next generation as they were presented with added touches for their bouquets – blush satin ribbons for daughters, while granddaughters wore soft pink velvet and lace for great-granddaughters, emphasizing the legacy of The Columbia Ball.

A Grand Dinner and Dance

After the presentations, guests sat down for a sumptuous dinner, followed by an enchanting evening filled with dancing. The arrangements on each table featured an array of blooms including pink and white roses, vintage hydrangea, and fresh greenery, adding to the beauty and atmosphere of the night.

Adding to the family spirit of the evening, sons and grandsons were also invited to this cherished event, marking their milestone with Mr. Guy Collier Buffum and Mr. Maybank McLain Pope attending. Seated at the President’s table were distinguished guests, including past and current committee members who played essential roles in arranging this magnificent occasion.

Committee Efforts Shine

A big shoutout goes to the dedicated committee chairmen who brought the night together, from decorations and invitations to music and seating. Their hard work shone through every detail, creating an atmosphere of elegance and joy for all.

With smiles, laughter, and a touch of sparkle, The Columbia Ball not only marked the start of the debutante season but also created beautiful memories for everyone in attendance. This annual event is a true celebration of tradition, family, and youth embracing a bright future! We can’t wait to see what the rest of the debutante season holds!
