Exciting Developments in Columbia’s Community

Columbia is buzzing with excitement as numerous local organizations recently celebrated significant achievements and welcomed new leadership. Whether it’s in the realm of social services, historic preservation, or the culinary scene, there’s a lot happening in our beloved city!

Homeless No More Embraces New Leadership

At the September board meeting for Homeless No More, the organization welcomed a fresh executive committee to guide them in their mission to provide housing and support for those in need. Leading the charge is Marti Bluestein, who steps into the role of board chair with a wealth of experience and dedication. Supporting her are Frank W. Cason, the newly appointed vice chair, and returning members Kimberly Snipes as secretary and David M. Kirkpatrick Jr. as treasurer. This energetic team is eager to advance the organization’s efforts to create lasting solutions for homelessness in our community.

Changes at Epworth Children’s Home

In another strong move for local philanthropy, Kendra Faile has been named chief operating officer, while Lauren Tinman takes on the role of chief strategy officer at Epworth Children’s Home. Their leadership is expected to enhance the support and services offered to children and families facing challenges in the Columbia area. Their fresh perspectives and commitment to the community promise to make a positive impact.

Historic Columbia Recognized for Excellence

Our city doesn’t just care for its citizens; we also treasure our rich history! Historic Columbia has been honored with the prestigious Trustees’ Award for Organizational Excellence from the National Trust for Historic Preservation. This accolade is a testament to the hard work and dedication the organization has shown in preserving and promoting the fascinating stories that shaped our city. Their efforts keep Columbia’s history alive, and this recognition further establishes their importance in our community.

A Culinary Celebration Ahead

Foodies, mark your calendars! The Greater Columbia Chapter of the South Carolina Restaurant and Lodging Association (SCRLA) is gearing up for its annual Columbia Restaurant Hall of Fame and Benefit Dinner on Monday, November 25, at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center. This year’s event will honor the beloved Carmella and Joe Roche, the dynamic duo behind Villa Tronco, with a Lifetime Achievement Award. Joining them in the Hall of Fame are renowned local eateries such as Steve Cook from Saluda’s Restaurant, Larry Chandler of Firehouse Subs, and Mark Price from Mill Pond Steakhouse. It’s sure to be an evening filled with delicious food, heartfelt stories, and plenty of local pride!

Recognition for Local Legal Professionals

Community leaders aren’t just found in service or hospitality; our legal professionals are also making waves. The Honorable Judge DeAndrea Gist Benjamin, alongside Deputy Solicitor Ashley Hammack and Assistant Deputy Attorney General Kinli Abee, received the Ernest F. Hollings Award for their outstanding work in the criminal justice system. Their dedication exemplifies the commitment of Columbia’s legal professionals to justice and community well-being.

Celebrating Achievements in Vocational Rehabilitation

Last but certainly not least, The Marwin Company garnered the esteemed South Carolina Business Partner Award from the South Carolina Vocational Rehabilitation Association (SCVRA). This award recognizes their unwavering support of individuals striving for success in employment and independence. Their efforts play a crucial role in helping many achieve their dreams.

With all these wonderful developments, it’s clear that Columbia is not only a city rich in history and culture but also one that truly cares for its people. From leadership changes to awards and recognitions, there’s a palpable spirit of growth and community in the air. So let’s celebrate our local heroes and their unwavering commitment to making Columbia a vibrant place to live!
